Spring has arrived and peak golf season is just around the corner! So come out and enjoy some golf!

I want to remind everyone that the Friday Night Scrambles start on Friday, April 11th. We’ll be having a scramble kickoff that evening to celebrate the start of the season! We’ll be posting information about that out asap.

This past weekend we had Mikel’s Revenge tournament and had a really great turnout! Thanks to all who played. The Adios to Winter tournament is April 5-6th. This is a 3 person scramble and will be flighted after the first day. The afternoon tee times are going fast so sign up as soon as possible.

Just a reminder that if you need anything golf related we can get you a great price in the golf shop.

Kindest regards,

Billy Pope

March 2014

From the President

On behalf of the Board and search Committee, I would like to welcome Billy Pope as our new General Manager of Canyon Country Club.  Billy is very excited to have this position after working here for the last 5 years and considering so many of you friends.  If you haven’t already done so, I invite you to come by and say hello.

We had 24 teams play in the Polar Bear Tournament, which turned out to be a fairly nice weekend for golf, though it did start off a little cold on Sunday.  If you haven’t done so already, you might mark your calendar for our tournaments this year.  Our next tournament is Mikel’s revenge scheduled for March 22.  We are still working out the details on the format of the tournament, but I’m sure it will be fun.

In an interesting side note that could affect Canyon Country Club:  Two weeks ago at a water conference in Amarillo, a meteorologist from the National Weather Service gave a presentation on how there is almost a 50% chance that an El Nino weather pattern will form in the Pacific Ocean later this year.  Historically this means more rain for out part of the world.  Let’s pray that happens.

Hope to see you soon,

Chad Pernell

From the GM

Hello to everyone,

It’s my second week on the job as the general manager for Canyon Country Club and I could not be more pleased with how things are going. This past weekend we had our first tournament of the year, the Polar Bear. The weather was nice and we had a great turnout. Thanks to who all participated!

We are taking registration for both tournaments, so get signed up today!

There will be some changes in the merchandise we will be carrying in the golf shop. We will have accounts with most major golf brands, and we will be able to order any item you might need at a great price! If you every have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask any of the pro shop staff.

In closing I would like to thank everyone for the support and encouragement I have received since taking this position. This is a great opportunity and I am honored that the board of directors chose me to be the general manager of this club. It has a special place in my heart and I am looking forward to working hard and making this an even better country club.

Kindest regards,

Billy Pope

February 2014

From the President

First of all I would like to wish everyone a belated Happy New Year.  I hope this is a great year for you and your family.

As we start a new year at the club, I would like to express thanks to those who have completed their term on the Board – Eddie Clement, Sue Herring, and Scott Hetzler.  They have put in a lot of time into making this a better place for everyone to enjoy.  I would also like to express my appreciation to Travis Loe who has served as president for the last two years.  He’s been an excellent leader and I look forward to learning from him and others in the future.

We have four new Board members – Holly Johnston, Ty Roberts, Chad Powers and Brad Tooley (though Brad has been serving the end of a vacated position this past year).  I look forward to serving with them and getting to know them better as well.

As Travis mentioned in his last newsletter, we are searching for a new manager of the club and are accepting applications through the end of January.  We anticipate having someone hired within the next month.

As I prepared to write this, I read over newsletters in the past and noticed one a couple of years ago where Courtney, Zach and Billy were recognized for stepping up while we were in between golf pros.  Here we are again and we have the same people stepping up and doing a great job.  I really appreciate all they do for the club.

Since becoming a member here, my wife and I have felt privileged to be a part of this community and look forward to raising our girls here.

Best Regards,

Chad Pernell

December 2013

From the President

As I write this, I am looking forward to turkey and dressing in just a few days. Hope everyone has a great holiday season. Christmas is quickly approaching and I am looking forward to our club Christmas banquet. If you have not been to one of these you are really missing out.  It’s a great time with extraordinary dinner fare by our own Teresa Villalobos.

Well we have enjoyed a lot of beautiful days this fall and the golf has been great. Hope we see lots of moisture this winter, the course is in need of water.  Pray for Rain (and snow!!!!!)

As most of you know by now, the board voted to not renew Tim’s contract.  A search committee is being formed to look for a new manager for the club. The board is in search of a person who can help us utilize all assets of our club to increase membership and keep costs in line with our income.  As you all know, keeping cost down, but providing the membership with an enjoyable golf and club product is always a challenge.  Any thoughts you have on this and other matters are always welcome by the board of directors.  Give Courtney a call if you would like to be placed on the agenda of the next meeting.

Speaking of the Board, Mark Sowers is heading up the Nominating Committee for next years board members.  There are going to be four places open and we need good quality leadership.  Let Mark or Courtney know if you or someone you know is interested in running for these places.

Remember the club when you need a place for a party during the holidays.  Rates are very reasonable and these parties help support our club and employees. Come on out and enjoy the holidays with your fellow club members!

Happy Holidays!!!
Travis

November 2013

From the President

Hope everyone is looking forward to the holiday season. Thanksgiving is quickly approaching and I am looking forward to lots of turkey and pumpkin pie. We have enjoyed a lot of beautiful days this fall and the nice cool weather makes golf more fun.  I still think fall is a great time for golf, winds are generally low, temperatures are just right, and we really need to support the club during these slower months. Why not bring some family out to play around the holidays?  The club promotion at “Fair on the Square” during the WT Homecoming festivities was a success and we have seen results from it already. Billy did a great job of promoting CCC to the people of Canyon.  Thanks again to Debbie Neufeld, Brad Tooley, Clarence Vaughn and Jessie Pope for helping out. Be sure and promote the club every time you have a chance. So many people still don’t realize we are here.  Every green fee we bring in during the winter makes a big difference.

Remember to come out to the club for football games, etc.  The bar is open in the afternoon and on weekends.

Have a Great Thanksgiving,

Travis

From the Pro

Hello members,

Well unfortunately I think winter is starting to arrive here.  We have already had many mornings where the course is closed for a good bit of time due to frost delays.  Usually the sign that it is going to start getting cold soon.  Darn.

Well we had only a couple of events this past month to talk about.  First was the ryder cup.  There were only 20 players involved this year.  The winning team members this year were Eddie Clement, Steve Dragosavic, Kyle Farmer, Jimmy Jones, Kay Reynolds, Ronnie Reynolds, Roger Senter, Javier Solis, Deanna Sowers, and Mark Sowers.  They won by a pretty healthy margin of 22 points to 8 points.

Also we had the 19 man shootout with 18 participating.  Eddie Clement came out on top, Mark Sowers was second, and Jim Giacomazzi rounded out the top 3.

There will be no more events until next year so come on out and play when you get a chance and its not too cold!!

I would like to take this chance to remind all of you that if you need something and it is not in stock at the pro shop, odds are very good that we can get it for you.  I have noticed recently that some of the members are showing off their new clubs that they have purchased at Golf Headquarters, online, etc.  PLEASE realize that 99.9% of the time not only can I get you the same product, I can get it to you at a substantial savings over the prices at golf headquarters.  So please take the time to call or stop by and see what kinds of prices I can get you things for.  Thanks!!  Hope to see you all around your club very soon!!

October

From the President

Fall has officially arrived.  I am enjoying the nice cool weather and hope you are too!!  I still think fall is a great time for golf, winds are generally low, temperatures are just right, and we really need to support the club during these slower months.  Be sure and come on out and play!  I would like to start out by saying Thanks to some of our members and employees.  Billy Pope has put together a great advertisement for our club by hosting a booth at “Fair on the Square” during the WT Homecoming festivities. This has been a lot of work and Billy has done a great job. Canyon usually expects a turnout of over 10,000 people so this will give us great exposure. We will have drawings for some great prizes and be handing out literature regarding the club. Debbie Neufeld has been a big help in creating the graphic designs to be used on cards and other handouts. Brad Tooley has been a big help in creating a banner for the booth and Teresa Villalobos is donating burgers and fries to those who take advantage of our reduced fee for non-members.  This should be a big boost to the club. THANKS to those who helped.

Everyone should come out to the club to play golf, watch football and visit. Hope to see you there.

Have a Great Fall,

Travis

From the Pro

Hello Members,

Well it looks as if the cooler weather has started to show up.  It sure makes for some great golfing days as long as the wind doesn’t blow in with it!!  With the arrival of Labor Day it sure gets slow around here.  If you get the chance you should head out and play.  Days are usually not very busy and you can get around at a nice pace.  Come on out and see for yourselves!!

We hosted the 3 Man Scramble on the 14th and 15th of September, with an awesome turnout of 111 players!!  That is the most we have had in any tournament here in a long long time.  The course was in excellent shape (as usual) and the results were as follows:

Championship Flight:

1st        Craig Ouellette, Jonathan and Greg Shelley                 59-55

2nd      Billy Pope, Travis Kleman, Jentry Porter                                 59-61

3rd       Chad Pernell, Doug and Josh Sims                              62-61

First Flight:

1st        Matt Lichtie, Matt and Eric Miller                                66-60

2nd      Bob Lang, Don Cofer, Javier Solis                              65-61

3rd       Ross Macon, Brock Swain, Levi James                                   67-62

Second Flight:

1st        Wylie McIntire, Mike Yell, Alton McCormick             68-63

2nd      Darin Stallings, Tyson and Tommy Myers                   69-63

3rd       Wayne Taylor, Corky Moore, Richard Mc Minn                     68-64

Third Flight:

1st        Dustin Simpson, Brian Batenhorst, Mark Wright                     71-66

2nd      Ken Shufeldt, Thom Clark, Justin Bingham                 73-67

3rd       Larry Maxwell, Leonard Neusch, Bobby Reining                    75-71

Thanks to all that played and to the Burton Family for their continued sponsorship of this event!!

Well there are only 2 events left this season:   The Ryder Cup on the 5th and 6th of October and the 19 Man Shootout on the 13th.  Get signed up if you want to play!!!

Also, I know that many of you don’t realize that I can order pretty much anything you want or need as far as equipment goes, whether its clubs, balls, gloves, grips, etc., not to mention any clothing that you may like.  Before you go to Golf Headquarters and spend too much, how about checking with us here in the golf shop.  I can almost guarantee that I can beat the prices you will find anywhere else on the things you need, not to mention that as members you always receive a 10% discount on anything you purchase from me.  So please take the time to check with the golf shop and see what kinds of prices you can get here.  I truly appreciate your patronage!!

September 2013

From the President

Are you ready for some football!!!  The summer season is coming to an end but that doesn’t mean we need to give up our golf time.  Fall is probably the very best time for golf in the Texas panhandle.  The wind is usually reasonable and temperatures are just right.  Be sure and come on out and play!  I hope everyone had a great summer. It sure felt short this year.  We have a couple of tournaments this month that we really need to get out and support.  Unfortunately our tournaments have been down in participation this year and the Board is planning on taking a very hard look at our schedule for next year.  It looks like reducing the number of tournaments is one of our options.  If you have thoughts on this, let one of the Board members know.

Special thanks this month to several people who have given their time and efforts to the club.  Charlie McClure has been taking care of our sign on Highway 60 and the grass around it for several years.  This involves hauling his personal lawnmower back and forth and mowing through grass, weeds and trash on some really hot days!! Let Charlie know that we appreciate the work!  Jill Harrison has done an excellent job of maintaining our pool this summer.  She handled all the cleaning, chemicals and landscaping around the pool and did a great job.  Thanks Jill!  Thanks to Clarence Vaughn and Bob Lang for their work on the big well this month.  I know that I have left out a lot of people who do a lot of work, THANKS to everyone who helps this club operate.

We are glad to announce that Brad Tooley has agreed to take the vacant Board position for the remainder of the year.  I know that he will be an asset to the club.

Remember that Friday Night Scrambles are still going on and this is a great way to meet fellow members and have a good time.  The Super Scramble will be coming up real soon and we need a big turn-out.

 Have a Great Fall,

Travis
