From the President
I hope everyone is having a great start to their 2012 New Year. I’m sure everyone is still keeping those New Year resolutions! The stockholders meeting has come and gone and the board members are busy working on ideas to improve our club. One of our fist priorities has been to do everything we can to increase membership (and revenue) and to trim as many of our costs as possible. The board would lobe to hear any ideas you might have along these lines. The members are always welcome at the board meetings. You have probably noticed that we have cut back hours on the bartenders, but Tim and the guys are always available to get anything you might want from the bar. The weather has been somewhat crazy so far this year but I am sure we will be getting a lot of pretty days now. One thing we would like to remind everyone about is keeping up our pace of play. If you see problems with slow players on the course, please call the pro shop to report it rather than confronting the offenders yourself. Tim will take care of these issues and that way none of our members will have any problems. I would like to encourage everyone to come out and play in all our tournaments and to encourage friends and family to come play at Canyon Country Club. We need all the members and green fee players we can get. Janice has started up Saturday Game Nights and that will be a lot of fun. Come on down and enjoy the fellowship. Hope to see you all at the club soon.

From the Golf Shop
Greetings from the golf shop! Well it is hard to tell what this weather likes to do around here isn’t it? We have had everything from 3 inches of snow to 78 degrees this February!! Try as we might, we were not able to get the Sweethearts Scramble played, due to bad weather on both scheduled days. Hopefully next year we can luck out and schedule it on one of those 78 degree days!!
The Polar Bear tournament was played in January, and we ended up with a good turnout of 25 teams. Jim Giacomazzi and Don Coffer went ahead and gave everyone a nice beating to take home the title in the Championship Flight, with Brian and Parker Noel coming in second place. Other CCC members who cashed in the event were Javier Solis and Eric Moya in the First Flight, Dan Luther and Brito Valdez in the Second flight, and David Stephenson and Rick Weitner in the Third flight. Way to represent the club you all!! And thanks to all who participated!!
We have two events scheduled for this March. First will be the Mikel’s Revenge/Beat the Pro event on Saturday, March 10th. Format will be the same as last year, with Mikel and myself playing a scramble against the field of other two person teams. Our scratch score will go against your net score. Like last year, you will bet any amount you want. If you win, that amount is doubled as credit for you in the golf shop, and if you don’t beat us, then you still win the amount bet as credit in the shop. You cant lose (and not one of you did last year!!) haha. Also, we will have the Adios to Winter 3 Person Scramble on Saturday and Sunday, March 24th and 25th. This is a big event for us, which means lots of money in the pot to play for, so make sure you find a team and get signed up!!
I should be receiving a large shipment of new products from Taylor Made and Titleist very soon, so stop on by the shop and check out the new goodies!! Also, if there is something in particular you would like to see me carry in the shop please let me know so I can get your favorite products for you!! See you around very soon I hope!!

Ladies Auxiliary
We are still encouraging all ladies to join the auxiliary, you don't have to play golf, there are allot of other fun projects. Meetings are held the 2nd Thursday of the month starting at 7:00pm during the winter months and the second Wednesday of the month starting at 8:00pm during the summer. Dues is $21 for golfers, if you want to be eligible for the hole-in-one money, and $20 for non-golfers.

Ladies High Plains Golf Association
Need more ladies for High Plains Golf. This year's play will begin in April of 2012. Membership dues is $15.00 and $35.00 each time we play. The $35.00 covers the cart, green fees, and a lunch on the days of play. Any lady interested in playing next year, please call Kay Reynolds at 499-3310.

Wednesday Night Play
Women's Working Wednesday play will begin April 11th and run through August 29th. Please remember play is open to anyone, but you have to be a CCC member to play for the prizes. A dollar ($1.00) will be paid to the Pro shop weekly. There will be a different game played weekly and the winners will be paid out that evening.
Auxiliary members will be selling tickets again this year for a $500 Visa gift card. Ticket are 1 for $1.00 or 6 for $5.00.

From the President
Greetings: What a year it was in 2011. Dry weather, heat, bad economy, fewer rounds played. Lets hope 2012 will make a big comeback. We want to think those who served on the board and are now off. Dick Archer, Roger Senter, Rick Dabney, Russell Ashley. A lot was accomplished even though money was extremely tight. We want to welcome new members to the board: Travis Loe, Clarence Vaughn, and Charlie McClure. They will do a great job. What a place to be a member of. We have great people that well support our club and pitch in when the going gets tough. Thank all of you who support our club. New members bring new ideas. We look forward to seeing what all we can accomplish this year. The course is in great shape for the winter months and hopefully we can have some warm weather and keep playing through the winter months. Mikel and Javier have been repairing water leaks and other things and they are getting the course in good shape for spring play. Tournament play will be posted on the web site shortly and you can see what all is in store for this year. Land sells is looking good and hopefully in the next few months we will begin to see some building activity. New homes mean new members. Hope every one has a great and safe new year. Bring your friends down, talk up our club to everyone you know and remember: Keep playing and get those handicaps down.

From the Golf Shop
Well 2012 is officially here. As of this writing we have not yet had the polar bear tournament to start off the new year, but I will have results posted in next month’s newsletter. The weather is starting to cooperate and we are actually getting some play in this January, which is great when you compare it to December.
Remember that coming up in February we will have the Mikel’s revenge/beat the pro tournament. Although we may have to change the name this year to Tim’s revenge after the beating you all administered to me and Mikel last year!! That event will be coming up on Saturday, February 25th. Format is a two person scramble, you and your partner, against the score that Mikel and I post with our scramble game. You will of course receive a handicap, but just how much is yet to be determined. It’s safe to say that it will not be the same as last years!! Ha Ha.
Also new this February we will be running the Sweetheart Scramble. This will be a one day event, held on Saturday, February 11th, to help you celebrate Valentine’s Day. Format is a 2 person scramble, and teams must be made up of one man and one woman. Entry fee is yet to be determined for this event.
Remember that if you want to sign up for any event, please give us a call in the golf shop so that we can get you on the entry list!! And while we are on that subject, the sooner the better!!
Here is your tip for this month from the pro: When you are playing into the wind, remember to take a club or two extra and don’t take a full swing. Swing at about 75 percent. If you take your normal club for the shot and simply swing hard, one of two things will happen. Either your ball will come up short because it will balloon up into the wind, or the added spin you put on the ball will take the ball backwards straight off the green. So if you are at your normal 9 iron distance, for instance, pull your 8 or even 7 iron and swing easier than normal. Your ball will fly lower and with less spin. Try this and I think you will be surprised at how much better you play in the wind!!
Remember that we can special order products for you in the pro shop if we don’t carry something you want. Also remember that as members, you get 10% off anything except balls and gloves. I should have some new products arriving about the middle of February, so stop on by and see if you can find anything you can’t live without!!

From the President
Finally, the long standing water leak that was on No. 3 fareway has been repaired. Also along with a few other leaks. Thanks to Mikel and Javier for making the repairs. Also, it looks like the restrooms on the course are working – don’t know for how long but hopefully a long time. With the high winds, we have a lot of tree branches that are down – try not to run over any of these with the golf carts, we are in the process of getting them cleaned up. Overall, the course looks in good shape as we go into winter.
The new windows in the pro shop appear to be working excellent which should help out with the heating bills this winter. All we need now is some moisture in the ground.
It’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is almost here and before you know it, Christmas will be here. Which, by the way, if you are wondering what to get some one for Christmas, how about a membership to CCC or maybe something from the pro shop. We are still in desperate need for more members. This would be an excellent way to increase our membership. Tim has a lot of new goodies in the pro shop so come check it out.
Winter time is a good time to check out your equipment, clean your clubs, inventory your golf balls, change the cleats on your shoes, maybe buy a new cap. What ever you need, Tim has it or can get it for you. Hopefully we will have a mild winter and we can play all winter long. ( well, wishing doesn’t hurt anything).

We wish you a happy Thanksgiving and if you are traveling, be safe, check your vehicle over before leaving and drive carefully. Also, if you have guess coming to your house, invite them down to play a round of golf (weather permitting).

Keep up the play and get those handicaps down.

From the Golf Shop
Greetings from the Pro Shop!! Well we don’t have any tournament results to talk about for the month of November. Hopefully you all had a great Thanksgiving day, and hopefully your Christmas is just as good!!
We will be running some December specials in the shop. I have a supply of Pro V1 balls in the shop at the special price of just $40 per dozen, they are normally $48 per dozen. I only have a limited supply (about 42 dozen), and when those are gone they will go back to their normal price. I have received some Men’s and Ladies jackets recently, so come by and check those out. I will also have deals on all merchandise in the shop. And remember, if there is something special you are looking for that we don’t have in stock, it can always be special ordered. I have already done a few of these type orders. The sooner you order, the better chance you have of making sure it is here in time for the holidays!!
Please remember that we are open 7 days a week, and even though there are some days where it is not very fun to play, there are plenty of nice days to go along with them. So come on out and enjoy your golf course and take a break from the hectic holiday season!! Course Closed on Christmas Day
Canyon Country Club will be closed on Christmas Day, Sunday, December 25th. We will re-open on Monday at 10:00 a.m.

Club Christmas Gala
Canyon Country Club will be hosting its 3rd annual Christmas Gala on December 3, 2011. Dinner will be served at 6:30 pm, and members and guests are welcome. The cost will be $22 per person. You may RSVP at ccc@midplains.coop or call the course. Please bring a gift to participate in the White Elephant Gift Exchange.

New Years Eve Party
The New Years Eve party will be held at CCC on December 31st at 7:00 pm. Teresa will fix snacks. Those of you that are there until midnight are more than welcome to use the kitchen to make breakfast.

Ladies Auxilary
The Ladies Auxilary will be having their annual Christmas Party on Monday, December 5th at 6:30. Bring a $15 gift and a covered dish. Guests are welcome, but make sure they also bring a gift if they want to participate in the gift exchange.

Greetings:
We had a great turn out for the fund raiser scramble. The course was played backwards which was a lot of fun. Hopefully we can make this one an annual event. The funds raised were to help with the cost of getting the course restrooms repaired or replaced. We are currently in the process of trying to get them working by injecting chemicals into the system. After a few more weeks, we will then try to rod out the leach lines and if this doesn’t work then we will have to determine the best route for our money if we repair or replace the restrooms.
Winter is knocking at the door. One good thing is that we are not having to water quite as much so this should help with our water bill. The course is still in excellent shape for this time of year. Just because summer is over, that doesn’t mean you can’t still get out and play the course. Please repair any divots on the course while you are out there.
For you camera buffs, the trees are turning colors and the wildlife is beginning to show up so now is a good time to get some great photos.
Thanks to all of you who showed up at the Special Stockholders meeting. We had a good turnout. Some good decisions were made and some were put on hold till the annual stockholders meeting. The club will be setting in good shape for financial growth providing we have no major expenses. Hopefully we will have a mild winter and we can get a lot of play on the course.
Our weakest area is membership. Our membership is way down so if you know someone who is looking for a good place to play golf, tell them about our club. We need your help to bring in new members. Thanks again to all who contribute beyond the call of duty to the club. This is what makes Canyon Country Club one of the best kept secrets in the Panhandle.
Halloween is right around the corner so watch out for the little ones who might be trick or treating. Be safe during the fall festivals and remember to get those handicaps down.

Ladies Auxiliary
Congradulations to Tuffy for winning the Ladies Auxiliary's $500 Visa shopping card. The card was given away after the Ryder Club, October 2nd. Proceeds will benefit the Canyon Country Club Ladies Auxiliary.
Ladies High Plains Golf Association
Five (5) Canyon Country Club ladies ( Marsha Kirk, Wilma Higginbotham, Sally Tucker, Debbie Land, and Kay Reynolds) traveled to Clovis 12th to play in the last High Plains Ladies Golf Association Playday of the year. Kay won low gross for 2nd flight with a score of 81. Next year's play will begin in April of 2012. Membership dues is $15.00 and $35.00 each time we play. The $35.00 covers the cart, green fees, and a lunch on the days of play. Any lady interested in playing next year, please call Kay Reynolds at 499-3310.

Women's Working Wednesday play is officially over for the year, but a few ladies are still playing, and will continue to play as long as the sun allows.

From the Golf Shop
Well October is coming to an end and we have exhausted our tournaments for the year. Thanks for all of your participation in the events we hold! October saw the Ryder Cup, the Senior Partnership, the Men’s Shootout, and the Fundraiser Backwards Scramble. We had great attendance for all of these events.
The Ryder Cup was a different format from years past, and we seemed to have a positive response to the team efforts versus the individual format. The Shootout was won by Red Higginbotham, second place went to Scott Hetzler, and Brito Valdez rounded out the top three. The senior partnership Championship Flight was won by Johnny Guelker and Jeff Yarborough. First flight winners were Brian Kauffman and Dale Moon, and the Second Flight went to Carlos Mendez and Armondo Torres. The team of Clarence Vaughn, Johnny Vaughn, Trish Giacomazzi, and Zeb Read lapped the field in the backwards scramble. They shot a 56 to beat out the second place team by 6 shots. Way to go guys!! Trish also won the closest to the pin prize of a new golf bag!! Quite a showing on what was a pretty difficult course.
As the summer is winding down and the cold weather slowly creeps in, I am expecting some new fall weather clothing to be coming in shortly. I just today had some Nike shoes show up in both Men’s and Women’s styles. Stop by and take a peek at the new stuff!! Hopefully you can take care of some of your Christmas shopping here. I will be having a Christmas sale during the month of December, so stop on by and get a deal or two!! Remember if there is something you want and I don’t have it in the pro shop, I can always order it in for you. This is also a great time to get your clubs re-gripped for the upcoming year. Drop by and have it done while you are taking a little bit of a break from golf during the cold spell.
With the end of tournament play, you don’t have to worry about showing up to play, only to find out we have an event and the course is unavailable. So come on down here and enjoy some of the cooler temperatures we will be having over the next few months. Hope to see you all out on the course real soon!!

Greetings:
Summer is starting to wind down but there are still a lot of good days for golf. The course is still in excellent shape even due to the high temperatures and dry conditions we have had.
We still have quite a few tournaments scheduled in September so play in as many as you can. We would like to welcome Mark Sowers as our new tournament director. If you have questions or suggestions about the tournaments, please talk with Mark. He will do a great job.
We have added several new members to the club this summer. Hope you have had the chance to meet some of them. The Friday night scrambles have been a great place to meet them. We welcome the following people to the club: New Members for 2011

We are still in need of about twice this many more golfers. If you know of anyone who would like to join, please invite them to try our course.
We are still having some issues with the restrooms on the course. Please be patient with us till we get this resolved.
Due to the huge amount of bills we have had the past couple of months we are needing to cut corners to make up the difference. The board has sat down and gone through line items to try to see what all we could cut or reduce. If you have any suggestions on where we could cut, please tell one of the board members. We tried cutting the watering back to every other day instead of everyday but the drought is trying to keep us from this so we had to go back to more watering again. It takes a lot of electricity and money to pump water to the course. It seems like every time we turnaround something breaks. The swimming pool will be closed after Labor day so this is one way to cut back. Tim has been trying to find ways to get more golfers playing and ways to cut expenses. You may see a few changes in this area such as adding more tee times, running specials, etc.
I want to thank the staff and board for all the hard work they have put in this summer. Our board has been doing a lot of brain storming and asking a lot of questions. We have a great board of directors and they have a tremendous love for this club. Please give them a big pat on the back when you see them
Remember to keep playing and get those handicaps down.

From the Pro Shop
Well we had another hole in one this month at the club. This time it was Dale Pulliam on August 9th. On hole #5, Dale used his trusty 9 wood to score the first ace in his long golfing career. Ron Hiner and Dave Ritter were along to witness his perfect shot. Way to go Dale!! I know it’s hard to believe, but Clarence Vaughn was NOT in the group this time!! Ha Ha.
The Ladies Chaparral went off on the 20th and 21st with 23 teams participating. The Championship Flight was won by Terri Buccola and Connie Crossland, with Kelli Mooring and Cindy Guelker coming in a very close second place. First Flight taken by Ronda Jennings and Jennifer Wilkerson, and Susan Baltz and Kathy Gowdy took second place. The Second Flight was won by Jill Remy and Tami Pugh, while Kim Lackey and Deanna Sowers came in second. Thanks to all the ladies for playing, and to the entire ladies auxiliary for helping me with all the logistics of my first Chaparral!! You made it a lot smoother for me than it could have been, with all your guidance and input, and I truly do thank you for that!!
Please remember that if you would like to come out and play some golf, as a club member you can sign up for tee times up to two weeks in advance. Non-members can only sign up a day in advance, barring special circumstances such as tournaments. So call and get your prime time reserved early!! And while on the subject, it is a great idea to call and get yourself a tee time before you show up and find out we are busy. We have gone from 10 minute time blocks to 8 minutes to try and accommodate more play on the course, so please be sure that you are here early enough to be on the tee at your assigned time. Showing up late for your time may result in a long wait, and that’s no fun for anyone!!
As always, please see me in the golf shop for all your golfing needs. I am still getting things in to replace my now low inventory due to all our events, so if there is something you would like to see in the shop, PLEASE let me know. I value the input of you all, and want to help you anyway possible. And if you are struggling with your game, come see me for a lesson. I am available 6 days a week to help you (I’m off on Monday’s). Greetings:
We finally got some of the pot holes repaired. Hopefully it won’t be so bumpy driving down the road. We extended the berm on the south side of the parking lot to allow water to run past the door to the club house on the south side. That is, if it ever rains, maybe the water will not run into the ladies restroom now.New windows for the pro shop have been ordered and should be here shortly.
Since we started advertising, we have 14 new members. WE ARE GLAD YOU CHOSE CANYON COUNTRY CLUB AS YOUR GOLF COURSE! It was good to see some of these folks playing in the Friday night scrambles. Meet them and get to know them. I will try to get a list out in the next letter to let you know who they are. Hopefully we will have 14 more by next month.
Considering how dry and hot it has been, the course is in excellent shape. The greens are beautiful and the new sod has started growing and the fairways are beginning to take shape. I don’t know of any golf course in the Panhandle that is as good of shape as we are. THANKS to Mikel and his crew for doing an excellent job making our course the best in the Texas Panhandle. Keep praying for rain.
Some of the golf carts are beginning to show a little ware. If you are using a cart that needs some attention such as brakes being a little soft or something that just doesn’t seem right, please give Tim the number of the cart when you get through playing so we can get it fixed. Over all, the carts are in good shape. Remember the 90 deg rule and try not to drive through puddles of water or where there is no grass.
Golf play has increased quite a bit so please be patient if the play slows down some. There are going to be days when play is slow and days when it’s not slow. Be patient with the folks playing ahead of you and be courteous. If you are slow playing, please let the folks behind you play through. It’s very hard to maintain a constant flow.
The swimming pool is getting a lot of use. The lifeguards are doing an excellent job. Give them a pat on the back.
We have several advertising spots open on the tee markers. If you or if you know someone who would like to advertise on one of these, please contact one of the board members or Tim or Courtney and we will get them fixed up. The cost is $1,000 for 3 years.
Remember to get involved with the remaining tournaments, check the web site schedule for these, and play in the scrambles so you can meet and play with some of the new members. Play more, get your handicaps down and we’ll see ya on the course!

From the Pro Shop
Well it has been a busy month here at the club. During this past month we have had the Roadrunner, the Texas junior tour, the Pro-Am, member scrambles, a reunion, wow!! Lots of things to mention. First of all, the golf shop staff would like to send out a big thank you to the ladies auxiliary group who paid for a much needed, new air conditioner in the golf shop. During this heat wave the days were getting to be unbearable in the shop. The temperature inside the pro shop was routinely in the mid 90’s. The new a/c unit has eliminated that and it is now a very pleasant working atmosphere. Once we get the new windows in (which should be very soon), things will be just excellent in the shop. Again, thank you ladies!!
Due to all the events, I am getting picked over pretty good in the shop. New things are on order and should be arriving shortly. As I have mentioned before, if you have any need for new clubs or a new putter or new wedges, etc. etc., please check with me in the shop. I can most likely beat any deal you can find elsewhere!!
The ladies are having their Hi-Plains Ladies golf day on Wednesday, August 3rd. It will be a 9:00 shotgun start, so the course will be closed until 2:30 or 3:00 that day, so make your plans accordingly. The Ladies Chaparral has been moved to the 20th and 21st of August. The Super Scramble year end scramble tournament will be held on Sunday, August 28th starting at 1:00 Shotgun.
We are getting many new members here at the club, please say hello to the new folks and make them feel welcome!! Hope everybody is having a wonderful summer, and we look forward to seeing you around the club!!

Ladies Chaparral
The Ladies Chaparral will be held the weekend of August 20th & 21st. The format will be a partnership with scramble on one day and low ball the second day. There will be a meal served on both days. If you or someone you know would be interested in playing then please call the golf shop to enter.
Super Scramble
The last member scramble will be held on Sunday, August 28th. This is a 1:00 shotgun start. Call the pro shop to enter or if you have any questions.

From the Pool
We would like to thank everyone for a great summer out here at Canyon Country Club. Also, thank you to all of the lifeguards for their hard work this summer: Jayla Lackey, Brandi Ellison, Kristin Canida, Megan Godfrey, and Austin Hamil. The last day the pool will be open this year is August 21st, and it will close at 4:00 p.m. Last but not least, a very special thank you goes out to David and Rhonda Stephenson for taking over the pool this year. We hope everyone had a great summer at the pool, and hopefully we will see you again next summer!

From the President:
Hot, Hot, Hot. When will it end! Be sure to drink lots of water while out on the course. Pray for rain!
We had a great Doubles Couples Tournament. Some of the visiting players had some good comments about our club. They turned down the Tall Tower Open to play in our tournament, they said the course was in great shape, they liked the challenge of the course, the people were friendly and over all they had a great time.
We are very fortunate to have people who donate their money and time. Thank you to everyone who makes this club a great family type atmosphere. I don’t want to mention names because I would probably leave someone out. There are folks who do things that you never hear about. There is money donated from folks that you never hear about and this makes a special place to be a part of. Some of the things donated are: All of the sod you have seen lately has been donated. Plumbing repairs have been donated, equipment use has been donated, cart repairs and tire replacements have been donated, manual labor has been donated and many other things behind the scene that you do not see.
The women’s auxiliary has been great at fixing up and adding things that make the club a nice place to come. THANK YOU for your support!
With out all of the extras that are put into this club we would have a hard time keeping our heads above water. This also makes a good impression to those who wish to join our club.
We have had good comments on the swimming pool and the life guards. Way to go yall!
Attitudes are also important to a great club. Please give those who have helped a pat on the back and tell them how much we really appreciate their efforts. Keep positive to those who are visiting and looking for a club to join. Encourage them to come back and be a part of our family. Leave the negative things at home.
We finally got some insulation put in the pro shop. It was getting a little too warm to work in there. We are still in the process of getting bids to replace the windows in the pro shop and should have all the bids in sometime next week.
The adds and membership drive to run on KVII slipped a couple of weeks but should be up and running any day now so watch KVII for our adds. We need to up our membership so if you know any one looking for a good golf course to join, tell them about Canyon Country Club.

Well things here are on a roll. We have been very busy lately, which is a good thing. The Double Couples turnout was very good. We ended up with 18 teams (foursomes) which was nice considering the weather we had that weekend. Teams from CCC fared very well. There were 3 flights of 6 teams each, and 3 teams in each flight made money, so 50% of the participants got paid!! Results were as follows:

Ladies Auxiliary News
Pie/Cake/Dessert Auction
Working together, the Ladies Auxiliary and the Board of Directors hosted a pie/cake/dessert auction Saturday May 21st after the first day of play at the Bucks & Does tournament. $1700 plus was raised from this auction and will go toward the purchase of new windows and insulation for the Pro Shop.
9:00am, June 2nd, was tee- time for thirthy-eight grandmothers, playing in the annual Grandmother's trournment hosted by the Canyon Country Club Ladies Auxiliary. Three CCC ladies (Debbie Land, Sally Tucker, and Pat Boatwright) placed in the tournament. Sandy Jones had the longest putt on #7 and Kay Reynolds had the straightest drive on #8. Thanks to Debbie for another great tournament and Teresa for another great lunch.
Ladies High Plains Golf Association
Five of our of our ladies, Sally Tucker, Sandy Jones, Sue Herring, Debbie Lang and Kay Reynolds, traveled to Tulia Wednesday June 15th., to participate in the High Plains Ladies Play Day . Sue and Debbie were able to bring home two (2) points for the Club. Our next play day will be in Muleshoe, July 13th. Any woman is invited to join and participate in the FUN. From the President:
Greetings:
I don’t know about yall, but I’m ready for the wind to go somewhere else. Also, some rain would really be nice. Considering that, the course looks great but takes a lot of water to keep it going. The #4 and #9 sand traps are filled in and sodded. This is still ground under repair if you land in it. Thanks to Mikel and crew for fixing this. The wind has also blown a lot of large tree branches down and it will take some time to remove all of these, so be careful when driving underneath some of the old trees.
Talk about golfers, there have been 3 holes-in-one that I’m aware of lately; Johnny Vaughn, Dick Archer and Mark Sowers all had one’s recently. The Member’s Scrambles have been a lot of fun (except for the wind), and there are lots of new people playing our course.
We will be introducing a membership drive and ad campaign in association with KVII TV real soon. We will be targeting people who are age 35 years and younger. This does not mean that some one older can’t join; we want everyone to join up. The program kicks off in a couple of weeks so start watching KVII TV news & sports around the first of June. KVII is also helping us with our face book page so it should be up and running soon. Keep an eye on our web site (canyontxcountryclub.com) for up-dates and schedules.
Our work day was a huge success. Thanks to everyone who helped out. The pool was painted in about 1 ½ hours due to the amount of workers and it looks great! Our lifeguards came out and helped paint the pool, which will open on Memorial Day weekend. We still have several pool memberships available. The creek by the pond has been cleaned out and looks great. A lot of trash was picked up also, so when you see a can, paper, etc., pick it up and put it in the trash can. Thanks again to all of those who helped out – we couldn’t have done it with out you.
Several tournaments are coming up so check your schedule and get involved in as many as you can.
Pray for rain and get those handicaps down.

Well things are starting to get into full swing around here. The Friday night scrambles are a huge hit, and we have had great participation in them so far. For those who have not played yet, please make some time and come join us. They are a lot of fun!! Just remember to call or stop by the pro shop to register before 4:00 the day of the event.
We have had another hole in one here at the club. This time it was Mark Sowers holing out his trusty 7 iron on hole #14 in front of his wife, Deanna, and friends Lynn and Holly Johnston. Way to go Mark!!! I guess it is possible to have a hole in one around here even if Clarence Vaughn is not in the group!! Ha.
The pro shop would like to take a moment to congratulate longtime shop assistant Billy Pope on his upcoming marriage to his fiancé Jesse on May the 28th. The next time many of you see Billy he will be a married man. Congratulations, Billy, we wish you a long and happy marriage!!! And while on that note, the golf shop welcomes Austin Hamil as Billy’s replacement in the pro shop. Many of you probably know Austin as he has worked at the club for the last couple of years as one of the lifeguards. Say hello to Austin the next time you come by.
The Bucks and Does couples scramble was held on the 21st and 22nd of May. We had a very nice turnout with 36 teams signing up. We ended up with 4 separate flights, based on handicaps, with the results as follows:

We still have many events coming up to play in. Next on the agenda is the Grandmothers tournament on June 2nd, followed by the two man best ball on June 11th and 12th, and the Double Couples on June 25th and 26th. If you want to play in any of these fun tournaments, please let the pro shop staff know, and the sooner the better. The cut off date for the large events is usually the Wednesday prior to the start date.
Last but not least, we are working on getting a facebook page established for Canyon Country Club. This is still in the works, but check it out if you have a chance. Hope to see you around the course soon!!

From the President:
Greetings: We lost another one of our dear members – Buddy Townsend. Please keep this family in your prayers. Buddy will truly be missed. He was a joy to be around especially during the Friday night scrambles.

Golf play is beginning to pick up. However, we need more members so if you have any good ideas we can use to recruit new members please tell one of the board members. We have already had several suggestions from our current members and will try to decide which ones will work.

The first Friday night scramble was a success and it was good to see old and new faces on the course. Teresa cooked catfish following the scramble – way to go Teresa. Check the schedule on line to see when the scrambles are scheduled.

Don’t forget our work day on Saturday May 7. We need to paint the swimming pool and clean up around the course. If we get enough people, we can do this in about 3- 4 hours or less. We are still in the process of filling in the sand trap on #4 green so now this is considered ground under repair.

Tim is beginning to get new merchandise in the pro shop so check it out the next time you are in there. If you need new clubs or repairs or anything that pertains to golf, he can get you fixed up.

We still have one of the best value’s in the Texas Panhandle – Canyon Country Club. It’s no secret – words out – Spread the Word.

Hello to all. There are many things to report about this month. We had two holes-in-one this month, both on hole #7. On April 17th, Johnny Vaughn used a 4 iron to knock it in the hole. Witnessing his shot of the year were his brother Clarence, Cleve Gustin and Travis Loe. Six days later on April 23, Dick Archer used a 5 wood in very windy conditions to hole it out for his first ever. His playing partners were Gary Erdman, Craig Curlee and, again, Clarence Vaughn. I think Clarence is the good luck charm around here!!

A reminder that May 7th is clean up day for the club starting at 8:30. The main projects are repainting the pool and cleaning up the trash in the creek. Lunch will be provided for all that volunteer. The more we have the quicker it gets done!!

We had the first member scramble on April 22 with some great weather to boot!! There were 44 players in the field, and there is always room for more, so don’t forget to come out and play in these fun events!! The winning team with a score of 6 under 29 was Kelli Mooring, Bob Lang, Brito Valdez and Chrystal Seemann. We will see if anyone can better that score this Friday!!

I am offering some range packages for those who want to get in some more practice and bring their game around. If you want to sign up month to month, cost is $20 for an individual or $30 for a family. Or, you can sign up for the entire year for $125 for an individual or $175 for a family. This plan is offered only to members of the club, and not available to the general public. Just stop by the shop to get going. Plans will start the first of each month. Also remember that as members of the club, you receive 10% off of purchases of clubs, bags, shoes and clothing. For smaller items like balls and gloves, the discount does not apply (basically because I sell them at such a small mark up). Also I am always getting in new things, some that you may need, so stop by some time and check out what I have.

The last thing to report on is the number of carts in a group. This will be necessary especially when we can start driving in the fairways. If you are in a group of 4, please limit your carts to 2 per group. If there are 5 in your group, then it is ok to have 3 carts. Please, lets try and stick to this. It will create less wear on our fairways and also less wear on the carts themselves. Your cooperation on this is greatly appreciated!! The weather is getting warm, the grass is turning green, so come on out to the club and play some golf!!

Guest Day
Ladies Guest Day will be held Thursday, May 5th, starting with a light breakfast at 8:00am and tee off at 9:00am, with a meal following play. Format is a four-person scramble and cost is $50. Everyone please plan on coming out and enjoying a day of golf. This is a great event, all of our ladies get to show off our great golf course to other women from around the panhandle.

The trees are beginning to leaf out, the grass is beginning to turn green and golf play is starting to increase. What a great way to start off spring. I am always amazed at God’s creation every time I drive to the club. There are not very many places in the world where you can see all 4 seasons and the abundant of wildlife we have in the canyon.
If you have wondered about all of the little yellow and pink flags all along the road, the phone company is in the process of laying a new fiber optics cable. Please watch out for their equipment. Hopefully they won’t be there too long.
Starting with the Adios tournament, on the weekends, and other tournaments, we will be running a beer/soft drink cart. We will run this for a while and see how it works. We will not run it during the middle of the week. This will be cash only for non members. Members may charge it to their account or pay cash. It may take a few trips to work out the kinks so please be patient with us.
Take a look around the next time you are in the pro shop. WOW! Tim has done an excellent job of cleaning and rearranging it. He has new stuff ordered so you should see an increase in merchandise very soon. The carts are all running but in the event you find something wrong with one of them, please tell Tim and give him the number of the cart so we can get it repaired.
Hope everyone survived the winter and is now ready to play golf. We need new members so tell everyone you know who plays golf to come visit our course and let’s try to increase our membership.

From the Golf Shop
Well the year is off to a great start as far as tournaments go. We had 32 teams sign up for the Adios 3-man scramble, a great turn out! There were 4 flights of 8 teams each. Aside from the 6 hour rounds and the less than desirable temperatures, things went pretty much to plan. There was a tie for the winner in the Championship Flight, and those teams decided to go ahead and split first place rather than play it off in the dark or do a scorecard playoff. The winning teams were Philip Fetzer, Scott Perry, and Jerry Hoover tied with Chris Sloan, Chad Coleman, and Dario Garza at 16 under par. In the First Flight it was Bobby Boswell, Ed Burge and David Moore who won a scorecard playoff to claim first prize in their flight. Second Flight was won by Clarence Vaughn, Johnny Vaughn, and Trish Giacomazzi. And last but not least, the Third Flight was taken by Rick Dabney, Janice Price and Stan Price. Low round of the weekend belonged to Chad Pernell, Nate Seemann, and Doug Simms. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to everyone for playing!! Hopefully our next tournament, the 2 man best ball on April 16 and 17, will have some warmer weather for everyone!! Give us a ring in the pro shop if you want to play and we will be sure to sign you up. Play is again slated for 2 shotguns each day at 8:30 and 1:30. The new merchandise is finally starting to arrive in the pro shop. If there is something you would like to see us carry but don’t have, please let us know so that we can see about getting your favorite brand in here. We will also be offering a monthly range pass to those who are interested in getting in a little more practice. If you are a member of CCC you can sign up at the beginning of each month in the shop for a cost of $25. There is no monthly plan for those who are not members. This will entitle you to all the range balls you want to hit that month. Just let one of the pro shop staff know and we can get you going. Hope to see you all out at the club real soon!!

Ladies Auxiliary
Meetings
The Ladies Auxiliary meetings will be moved to the second Wednesday of each month starting in May (for summer months only). Meetings will be held in the community room with NO SMOKING allowed. All ladies that are a member of CCC are invited to come and be a part of the Ladies Auxiliary. This does not just include the women that play golf.

Wednesday Play Day
April 6th will be the first OFFICIAL Wednesday night ladies play day of 2011. There will be a different game every Wednesday and prizes at the end of the year. Please call the golf shop by 4:00 to sign up and play begins at 6:00. All ladies are invited to play including non-members – so come on out, bring a friend and have a great time playing golf.

Fundraisers
The CCC Ladies Auxiliary will be selling changes on a $500 gift card again this year. Tickets are $1.00 a piece or six (6) for $5.00. Remember money received from fundraisers go directly back into the update and beautification of the club. Auxiliary members if you don't have your tickets, please contact Lori O'Loughlin.

High Plains Ladies Golf
Play starts in April and ends in October. Cost is $15.00 membership fee and $35 a month (this include cart fee, green fee, snack for breakfast and lunch). A different golf course is played each month, those include, Farwell, Muleshoe, Tulia, Hereford, Canyon, Clovis Muni and Chaparral Country Club in Clovis.

The snow we had was wonderful for the golf course. Hopefully the bitterly cold weather is behind us and as the weather warms up, and there is an increase in play.

Welcome our new board of directors. If you don’t know who they are, stop in the club house and see their photos hanging on the wall. Already they have come up with some new ideas that will help play and improve our course. If you have any ideas to help improvements, please give your information to one of these folks.

Tim is finally here. If you haven’t had a chance to meet him, stop by the pro shop and visit with him. He brings us some new and fresh ideas for the club. He is also busy painting and cleaning up the pro shop. What a difference a coat of paint makes.

We had a very successful Polar Bear tournament and the Mikel’s Revenge / beat the Pro tournament. I think this is the first time the weather has cooperated. Good turn out. It was good to see folks back on the course playing again.

The next time you play, look around the course. Mikel and his crew have been doing some clean-up. The old brick fountains on No 4 tee box and No. 9 tee box are gone. Also, (thanks to Roger Senter), we have removed the old shed and tank next to No. 3 tee box. When you are out and about, if you see any trash, coke cups, beer cans etc. please pick them up and put them in a trash can.

Get your clubs out of the garage, clean them up, buy some new balls from Tim, the grass shows signs of green and the weather is warming up so: LET’S PLAY GOLF!

From the Golf Shop
Thanks so very much for the warm welcome I have received here from all of you members. I am excited to be here, and appreciate the opportunity you all have given me. I have done some extensive cleaning in the golf shop along with some new paint colors and some organization. Hopefully you will like the new look in there!!

I will soon have some new merchandise on order, although I still need to visit with the representatives from the golf companies and get accounts set up, merchandise ordered and so forth. So please bear with me as new things should start showing up in the golf shop soon. If there is something you would like to see carried in the shop such as a favorite brand of clothing or balls or clubs, please let me know.

I would like to thank all of you who showed up to support the beat the pro tournament on the 19th. It was a great showing from the members, as me and Mikel didn’t win one single bet. Ouch!! All of the credit from this event has been put onto your club accounts, and you can use those credits for purchasing merchandise in the shop.

On that note, according to my understanding in the past you paid your golf shop accounts through the club. With the new point of sale system I am installing in the shop, you will actually see a separate statement from me if you happen to have an outstanding balance. So just a heads up on that.

I am still learning everyone’s names and faces, so please bear with me if I happen to refer to you as someone else. I promise to do my best to know you all soon!! Again thanks for all your hospitality, and if there is anything I can do for you please don’t hesitate to ask!!

From the President
First off I want to thank Jerry Neufeld for serving as our club president for the past 3 years. Also a big thank you to Wilma Higginbotham, and Sue Herring for serving on the board. These people were a big asset to the club and will be missed. We are a family and there are not any better members than what we have at CCC.

2011 brings a challenging year. With the economy being tight and fewer rounds of golf played, we are all challenged to step up to the plate and help out where ever we can. We have a great staff to work with and with Tim Davis arriving soon as our new Pro, we are looking forward to new ideas, new members, and ways to improve our course and increase our membership. We had a great stockholders meeting and several changes were made and a host of good ideas to work on. We will do our best to keep everyone informed of the happenings at CCC. Please check the web site from time to time. Let’s hope the weather cooperates through the remainder of winter so we can get ready for the Friday night scrambles.

A big thanks to Zach, Courtney and Billy for taking control of the Pro shop till Tim arrives and a big thanks to those who have volunteered to fill in while Zach and Billy attend classes.

Super Bowl Party
The Super Bowl Party at the club will begin at 4:30 on Sunday, February 6th. We will have plenty of food and there will be a chance for you to win some money with our annual Squares Pot. We would love to see everyone there, so don’t forget the party starts at 4:30.

Mikel’s Revenge / Beat the Pro
Our wonderful superintendent gets to play the role of the Evil Greenskeeper on Saturday, February 19th. Mikel will be setting the pins in the most difficult positions that he can find and the tees will be set way back. Find yourself a partner and see if you can stomach the six-putts that are inevitable. The format will be a two person scramble. There will be a 10 stroke handicap limit on your team. Also, there will be an optional Beat-the-Pro tournament. Mikel and Tim will play in the scramble, and yes we will be zero handicaps – (although many could argue that we probably need a few strokes!). The costs of the tournament will $20 for the scramble per player and an extra $10 per player for the Beat-the-Pro portion of the tournament. If you play in the Beat-the-Pro portion, you will automatically receive a $10 credit in the golf shop. If you beat Mikel and Tim, then you double your wager! You can’t lose! Teresa will be making dinner following play.

Ladies Auxiliary
The Ladies Auxiliary will be meeting on Thursday, February 10th at 7:00 p.m. in the community room with NO SMOKING allowed. All ladies are invited to come and be a part of the Ladies Auxiliary. This does not just include the women that play golf, but all ladies that are a member of CCC, as their fundraisers go directly back into the update and beautification of the club. Plus they have a really good time! Dues for 2011 have increased to $20 with $1 going to the hole in one...so the total is $21 for those who want to participate in this.

Membership Dues Increase
As of March 1st, the membership dues will increase to $138.13 per month. This was discussed and voted on during the January Stockholders Meeting.

Zach, Billy, and Courtney would like to thank all of the members that have helped us during the past couple of months. We could not have gotten through it without your help. Also, I hope everyone is as excited as we are about Tim Davis being our new Pro. We are looking forward to working with him and making our club grow. Also because of the lack of moisture, we are Cart Paths Only. We will allow those that need it a flag for the cart, but try to stay on the cart path as long as possible. I hope that everyone will have a great year, and that the weather will be nice enough so we can all have a chance to go out and enjoy our beautiful club. See you on the course!

Well it’s hard to believe how fast these past 3 years have gone. It seemed like only yesterday when I agreed to serve on the board and was nominated and elected to serve as President of Canyon CC. I have learned so much about the inner workings of a golf course and what it takes to keep a business a float.
The most important thing that helped me was our staff. I know that most businesses will tell you their staff is the best, but I truly believe Canyon CC would not be in as good as a position (course or financially) as we are if it were not for our staff. Casey was a huge asset to the club, and while we didn’t always agree with a direction or particular project, he was willing to set down and talk things out and do what was best for the members. He was willing to do whatever was necessary to make Canyon CC successful and competitive as a business. At times during the summer Casey would work as many as 60-70 per week, maybe even more. He really went above and beyond his duties, and I really appreciate all help and guidance he gave me during my time on the board. I wish him all the best in his new endeavor.
Speaking of Golf Pro’s, we have put together a search committee comprised of stock members & board members to help in the search for a new Head Golf Pro. We have advertised with the PGA (at no cost) and are accepting resumes till November 29th. The search committee will start meeting in December and conduct interviews and hope to have a recommendation to the Board by the first part of January. With any luck the new Pro can be introduced at the annual stock holders meeting.
I would like to recognize Mikel & Javier for the tremendous work they do for our golf course. These two guys work countless hours for the club. When you look at the amount of staff some golf courses have these guys do it with just the two of them (with some summer help). That to me is amazing. Talk to other golfers in the panhandle, I bet if they have played CCC they would tell you the course was in fantastic shape and would become members if we had a full 18 holes.
The other staff members are also a huge asset to the club, Courtney, Zach, Billie, Cassidy are valuable employees. Zach and Billie are now taking on more responsibility in running the shop with just the two of them. Courtney is also adjusting her hours to help out in opening the shop on Tuesday s and Thursdays. Thanks guys and gals.
With Casey now gone, there may be times that the Pro Shop is not opened at 8 or even 8:30. If there was a heavy frost on the ground, there is no reason to pay these guys to come open the shop and sit around waiting for the greens to thaw out. Please keep that in mind if you are calling to book a tee time or to come down and play.
I would also like to take this time to thank all those I have served with over the past few years. Without listing names (cause I would probably forget someone), I would like to say thanks for serving on the board of directors, thanks for pitching in when we needed some help, financially or physically. It was always comforting to know that our board members would go well above and beyond what was asked of them to serve. I also don’t want to forget our members. I believe we have some of the finest members in the panhandle maybe even the state. Even though we had our disagreements I believe our members are a true asset to Canyon CC.
Lastly, I want to look to the future. We do have some difficult choices coming up in January at our annual Stock Holders meeting. We have been running on a shoestring budget for the last few years and we are going to have to make some changes. Go ahead and mark your calendar now, the annual meeting will be on January 17 at 7:00pm.

Ladies Auxiliary Christmas PartyThe Annual Ladies Auxiliary Christmas party will be held on December 6th at 7:00 p.m. All ladies are invited to attend (you do not have to be a member of the auxiliary). Please bring a covered dish for dinner and a $15.00 gift for exchange. Please put your name on the gift so that the person receiving it will know who it is from. Remember – the fun starts at 7:00 and lasts until 9:00.

Canyon Country Club’s Christmas Gala
On Saturday, December 11th, everyone is invited to the Christmas Gala. Dinner will start at 6:00 p.m. Teresa is making us a wonderful Christmas dinner. There will be entertainment and there will be a few games played after dinner. Please bring a white elephant gift for each person. The Club will be hosting their annual New Year’s Eve Party. The party will start on December 31st at 7:00 p.m. The club will furnish snacks and finger foods. This is always a fun time so we hope to see everyone there.

From the PresidentThe leaves are changing and the weather is cooling off as fall settles in. The last couple of weeks have been absolutely beautiful for playing golf. I don’t know any other golf course in the Texas panhandle that offers as much beauty as Canyon Country Club. Now, if we could get Mother Nature to cooperate and bring us some much needed rain that would be the icing on the cake.
With the coming of winter I would like to ask everyone to be more aware of your golf cart. Try to stay on the paths as much as possible. The Board of Directors is not making it mandatory (at this time) to remain on cart paths at all times, just making a suggestion. The less we drive on the fairway, the better our course will be next spring. I know I am guilty of still using the 90-degree rule at times, so I myself need to be a little more attentive when playing. If you are capable to walk a little further into the fairway, leave your cart on the path and lets all try to save our fairways for next spring.
The only other new business, is the nominating committee is talking to stock members to find individuals that would be willing to serve on the Board of Directors for the next few years. Elections are held during the upcoming stockholders annual meeting in January. If you are interested in serving on the board get with Casey, Courtney or let one of our current board members know.

Ladies Auxiliary
The Ladies Auxiliary will be decorating the club for Christmas on Saturday, November 20th at 2:00 p.m. Everyone is welcomed to come and help out, we would love to see you all there.

The annual Christmas part will be held on Monday, December 6th. Please bring a covered dish and a $15.00 gift.
Annual Christmas Party
The annual Christmas Party will be December 11th at 6:00 p.m. Invitations will be mailed before Thanksgiving so keep your eye out for that in the mail.

From the Golf ShopTournament season is over. Hope everyone had a great golf season. Now that the grass is turning brown, remember that there are several things that you can do to help the course through the winter. Remember to sand all divots, repair your pitch marks on the greens, and to stay on the cart path for as long as you can. Cart compaction can have a direct effect of the quality of turf that we have in the spring. Remember to do these things to help Mikel keep our course looking great.

The Senior Partnership was held on October 9th & 10th. The weather was great both days. Here is a list of members who placed in the tournament.

Casey Renner is Moving OnI have accepted the Director of Golf Position at Palo Duro Creek Golf Club. This will be a great opportunity for me and my son. This was a hard decision to make, Canyon Country Club has been great for me and my family. I am proud to have worked with all of you and look forward to seeing you all soon. If you ever need anything from me, please don’t hesitate to call. Once again, thank you for allowing me to work and grow as a professional at your wonderful facility.

From the PresidentFall is definitely in the air and we are finally seeing some cooler temperatures. All we need now is some much needed moisture. Hopefully, the coming winter will be mild in terms of temperatures but plentiful of moisture. Fall is a great time for golf; milder temperatures, less wind (hopefully) and with the leaves changing makes for a beautiful golf course setting. We still have lots of golf to be played this year, so get out and enjoy the beauty and splendor of Canyon CC.
The pump, motor and variable speed drive is now completely up and running, including the new “shed” to house it all, and it looks so much better. Mikel is also trying to get bids on replacing the “shed” between #6 fairway and #7 ladies tee. I’m sure everyone will agree that “shed” needs replaced. Several of the board members were discussing at the last board meeting about removing the green building by the # 3 tee box. Hopefully we can get that done in the next month or so.
A couple of Thank You’s needs to be mentioned this month. First is we had a good turnout for the Ladies Chaparral in late August. Thanks to Bob Lang for furnishing drinks for the ladies and he and Lynn Johnston drove the cart around handing out beverages. Thank You to Roger Senter for installing (on a Saturday afternoon) a new compressor for the air conditioner in the bar and for some minor electrical “fixes” around the club. While we do seem to struggle financially at times and cannot afford to do some things we would like, our stock/board members seem to step up and pitch in all the time. No doubt, ACC members or TGC members don’t pitch in like our members do. Thanks again guys.
As you know by now the fundraising campaign failed to meet its goal. We did have 55 members willing to step up and donate $230 to the land account of CCC, to replenish our coffers. Since the goal was not met no one is financially obligated to fulfill their pledge, however if you chose to go ahead with you donation, please contact Courtney and make arrangements with her. Thank you Regina Dinga for your hard work and diligence in this endeavor.

From the Golf ShopThe Senior Partnership will be held on October 9th & 10th. This is open to men who are 50 years old or older. The first day will be a scramble and the second day will be low ball. Flights will be determined by your combined handicap. Call the golf shop to sign up your team or for more information.

The 19-Man Shootout was moved to October 17th. This is a fun event with 19 men teeing off #1 tee box and then we lose one man a hole until we get to #18. Everyone will get their full handicaps so men of all abilities can play. It’s a fun event with all kinds of possibilities and outcomes. The entry fee is $10 plus the cart. Call the golf shop if you want to enter or have any questions.

The Ryder Cup was held at the end of September. The Men's side won this years’ contest, however, there were a lot of close matches and it really could have gone either way. Thanks to everyone who played and we will see everyone again next year.

The Robert C. Burton 3-Man Scramble was a great success this year. Thanks to the Burton family for donating money for the meals for the weekend. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to everyone who played.

Winter time is coming up. Remember to stay on the cart path as long as possible when driving a golf cart. Also, please remember to fix your pitch marks on the greens and to sand all of your divots in the fairways. Thanks for making Canyon Country Club a great place to be a part of.

From the PresidentAs we wind down from another summer of golf, Canyon Country Club continues to strive to be the best 9-hole course in the panhandle. Casey and his crew in the Proshop work to offer the best customer service and products available. Mikel, Javier and Paul work countless hours to offer the best course and what many people describe as the best greens in the panhandle. In case you haven’t thought about it before, during the heavy golfing months (April-Oct.) Casey generally works 6 to 7 days a week (some days 10-12 hours each day) and will work several days without any days off. Mikel is the same way, although he has Javier to help cover every other weekend, it is not uncommon for Mikel to be out on the course at 9pm, checking sprinklers and making sure everything is working as it is suppose to be. I know I have said this before, but we need to compliment our staff for all they do for us. I realize these folks are paid to do this, but also consider they haven’t had a raise in a couple of years. We need to remember this when we meet at our annual meeting in January.

Just wanted to let everyone know the new pump and motor was installed with no problems. Mikel was able to get back on a more effective watering schedule and the new variable speed drive should be installed in a few weeks. One problem that we did run into was the current building that houses the pump was not big enough to handle the new variable speed system as well. Thankfully the company that is putting in the system is going to build a building and attach it to our existing building at no cost to the club.

The swimming pool closed on August 22. I think we can deem the “pool membership” a success. I don’t have all the numbers in at this time, but I do think it is safe to say the pool membership paid for all of the chemicals for the pool this summer and part of the salary for lifeguards. A couple of other things about the pool, I was hoping to find a “cheap” used slide to buy but none came available this summer so hopefully that will change by next year. We will also need to look at re-painting the pool next year. Last time it cost $2,000-$3,000 and I expect it would be around the same next year. In a perfect world what really needs to be done is to have the swimming pool re-plastered. Unfortunately to do that we are looking at $15,000 to $18,000, but if we re-plastered then we wouldn’t have to re-paint every 3-4 years. Just something for everyone to be thinking over the fall and winter.

It was a great summer this year. The weather never got to hot, we got a little bit of rain (keep your fingers crossed for more), and the golf course has never looked better. If you get a chance to see Mikal and his crew, be sure to tell him what a great job they have been doing.

The Ladies Chaparral was a big success this year. We had 27 teams from not only our club, but from all over the panhandle. Congratulations Lori O'Loughlin and Kim Davis for placing third in the second flight. Also congatulaions to Trish Giacomazzi for winning the putting tournament. Thanks again to everyone for playing and to everyone who volunteered their time and efforts to make this tournament such a huge success.

The Super Scramble will be held August 29th with a 1:00 shotgun.This our year end member scramble. There will be over $1000 in prize money and possible skin money to be had. If you are interested in playing please call the shop to sign-up.

The 19-Man Shootout is a fun event. It will be held on Sunday, September 12th. I will take the first 19 men to sign-up by the 12th of September. Cost is $10, so come out and enjoy the fun.

The Robert C. Burton 3-Man Scramble will be held on September 18th & 19th. There will be a morning and afternoon shotgun start on both days. To sign-up your team or if you have any questions, please call the golf shop.

The Ryder Cup Matches will begin on Saturday the 25th and end on Sunday the 26th. This is a fun event with the women versus the men. The men have won the last four years – but I’m sure the ladies will come out fighting to regain the cup. Every member is invited to play in this regardless of ability. If you would like to play or have any questions, please call the golf shop.

Remember that Labor Day is Monday, September 6th. Members may make their tee times up to a week in advance. Non-members can make their tee times only one day in advance. If you want to play on that Monday, get your tee time early.

From the President
Well, like usual it’s been an interesting month here at Canyon Country Club. I want to thank everyone that showed up for the special stockholders meeting that was held on July 12th. I think the members made the correct decision in approving the replacing of the well & and adding a variable speed drive that will hopefully add a few years of service to the pump and motor.

We had a big turnout for the Fourth of July festivities and I think we can deem them a huge success. I have heard from several members, of how wonderful the tournament was along with the fireworks and most people I have talked to are hoping to continue this tradition next year. A very big THANK YOU goes out to Casey for the planning and the promotion of the activities as well as the discharging of the fireworks. Thanks also go out to Mikel, Zach for their help. Last but certainly not least, the Lang’s for their suburb grilling. I know it was hot out there, but they did a great job of cooking. Its events just like this that makes Canyon Country Club a special place.

All in all the club seems to be rocking right along, the number of rounds being played is still down quite a bit from last year, but I think that is going on everywhere. We did pick up 4 new members last month, but we also lost 2 so our total membership is 155. Keep encouraging your friends and colleagues to become a part of CCC, we always need more members.

From the President:

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer as much as we are. It always amazes me how fast time flies, we are nearly half way into summer, before you know it school will be starting soon.
I wanted to update everyone on a couple of different matters. First, the Board of Directors has changed the summer hours yet again. We had hoped by opening the golf course at 7am during the summer months, we could pick up some additional income from green fee players (those trying to beat the heat), however we did not see a increase in play during that time. A motion was made, seconded and approved to return our hours to open at 8am 6 days a week and 10am on Tuesdays.
One other point I would like to bring up is the tennis courts. As most of you know the tennis courts are in very sad shape and more of an eyesore than a plus for the club. Fellow CCC resident Brad Tooley has asked for and received permission from the Board of Directors to start a fund raising mission to repair our tennis courts. His only request from CCC is to help in some lawn mowing around the courts and to cover any monthly expenses (light bill) associated with lighting the tennis courts. Brad is very confident that this project is very doable and hopes to have commitments in place and the project under way by the end of the year. Brad will be making posters and soliciting commitments from friends and business associates to cover the cost of resurfacing one of the existing courts. As the interest grows, the re-surfacing of the second tennis court will also be considered. As part of this mission, CCC may start offering a tennis only membership once the court has been resurfaced. This income would also help defray some of the cost of resurfacing the second court. The estimate for resurfacing the one court and installing new lights is estimated to cost approximately $8,000. If you would like to donate to the tennis court fund, a commitment is all Brad is looking for at this time, please get in touch with him at 499-3363. As the commitments start coming in and we get closer to starting the project, we will be having a clean up day to work on the area around the tennis courts and the maintenance barn. I applaud Brad for taking on such a tremendous undertaking and I encourage our members to support this project with your comments as well as your donations; this is really a win-win situation for everyone.

Summer is in full swing. I hope that you have gotten a chance to play our wonderful golf course. Mikel and his crew have done a wonderful job. Just a few reminders; please repair all ball marks on the green and sand all your divots. Also, please do not spray mosquito repellent on while standing on the green. These oil based products can kill the grass that is one the green. So, if you are going to spray yourself, be sure to do it on the cart path. Thanks.

July 4th Celebration
On Sunday, July 4th, we will be celebrating July 4th down here at the club. Starting at 7:00 p.m., we will be having a Par 3 Tournament. This will be an individual stroke play event, that will be flighted by your handicap. After the tournament, we will be having a cook-out with hamburgers and hot dogs, with desert following the meal. As soon as it gets dark, we will have a fireworks show. I am asking everyone who attends to bring some fireworks with you and Mikel and myself will set them off. The club will also furnish some fireworks. This will be a great time for golf, fellowship, and some entertainment. If you have any questions or would like to sign-up for the tournament, please call the golf shop.

NTPGA Jr. Tournament
Once again, Canyon Country Club is honored to host a Northern Texas PGA Jr. Tour event. The event will be held on Tuesday, July 6th. We are expecting around 60 kids to play our wonderful golf course. The course will open back up around 2:00 p.m.

Roadrunner Invitational
Our biggest tournament of the year is July 9th through the 11th. All members should have received an invitation. Included in the invitation was a tee-box sponsor sheet. If you or someone you know is interested in helping sponsor this event then please mail back the sponsor sheet to the club. Thanks for your support and thanks for playing.

Hi-Plains Ladies Golf
The Hi-Plains Ladies Golf Association will be hosting an event here on Wednesday, July 14th. This will be a 9:00 a.m. Shotgun start and the course will re-open at 2:00 p.m.

Club Championship
Our club championship will be held July 24th & 25th. The format for the men will be match play and for the ladies will be stroke play (gross & net). I encourage all members to participate in this event. If you would like to sign-up for the club championship please call the golf shop. Starting times will be determined on Friday, July 23rd.
After the morning round on Saturday we will have our annual Man-Woman Shoot-out. This is always a fun event where the players in the tournament are paired up with each other (no husband-wife teams) and we have a 9-hole shoot-out.

Pro-Member
Canyon Country Club’s annual Pro-Member will be held on Monday, August 2nd.I have many professionals from around the panhandle already signed up to play in the event. If you would like to play in the pro-member then call the shop. Starting times are flexible, so just let us know about what time that you can play. Thanks for supporting my Pro-Member.

KA Scramble
On Saturday, July 31st, CCC will be hosting the KA Golf Scramble. This event starts at 2:00 p.m. We will have open tee times in the morning but we will be closed at 2:00 for the tournament.

Friday Night Scrambles
All Member Scrambles will be held on Friday in July. The only week that we will not have one is the week of the Roadrunner.

From the President:

Its official, summer is here, or at least the kids are out of school. As the weather starts heating up, the swimming pool will be ready to go for the Memorial weekend. We have had a few minor issues with the pool but I have come to expect that every year. We will have 3 new life guards as well as two from last year. One new addition I am working on is getting a water slide for the pool. It will not be a new one but gently used. Texas Blue Lake pool is looking for a cheap one for us and hopefully we can have something in the near future. We have 5 commitments for the swimming pool membership and one or two others still interested. If you know of anyone that might be interested have them contact Courtney.
Everything around the course is looking great; Mikel, Javier and Paul (new employee) are doing a fantastic job as usual. Casey as always goes above and beyond in his duties in the Pro Shop; we also have a new employee in the Pro Shop James Josserand. While I am at it, let’s not forget any of our employees, they really go out of their way to help us out. Remember to give them a big Thanks the next time you see them.
As most of you have noticed we did some limited patching on the roads and in the parking lot. This is just a short term fix, which will hopefully get us through another year. We are still hopeful that some of these grants will come through. We have not heard anything official about any grants being awarded to us, but were keeping our fingers crossed.
Remember we have several golf tournaments coming up as well as the member’s scrambles, so sign up and come out and play. If you can’t remember when something is scheduled, check us out the internet at canyontxcounrtyclub.com. I hope you all have a great summer and we will see you on the course.

From the Golf Shop

Thank God for the rain. What a difference a year makes. We have had substantially more moisture this year than last. The golf course is coming in very nicely. As always we ask you to stay on the cart paths as long as possible. The less cart traffic we have on these old bermuda fairways the better they will look.

I would like to thank Bob Lang for his donation of cart tires (always need a few) and to Dick Archer and Roger Senter for putting in our new emergency phone line by the pool. This phone dials (and only dials) 911. So, heaven forbid, we ever need it, just open that box by the grill door and dial 911. This is a handy device to have, just in case we need it. Thanks again, guys

CHS Booster's Day/Night Fundraiser

The CHS Booster Club's Day/Night Fundraiser will be held on Saturday, June 5th. This tournament was postponed due to the weather. The course will close at 6:00 p.m. The proceeds from this tournament benefit the boys' and girls' high school golf teams here in Canyon (which is a very worthy cause).

Members Scrambles

The scrambles have started and are in full gear. This is a great way to meet new members and have a lot of fun with the ones you already know. Remember, the scrambles start at 6:00 and the deadline to sign-up is 4:00. The dates for the scrambles are:

Grandmother’s Tournament

The Grandmother’s Tournament will be held on June 3rd The tournament starts at 9:00 a.m. with breakfast starting at 8:00 a.m. The course will open around 2:00 p.m. that day. To sign-up for the tournament please call the shop.

Frank Self’s Pig Roast / Kids Inc. Day – Night Tournament

Frank’s annual Pig Roast will be held on Saturday, June 20th. After the Pig Roast – the annual Kid’s Inc. Day-Night Tournament will start at 6:00 p.m. The course will be closed all day for these two events.

Doubles Couples Scramble

The Doubles Couples Tournament will be held on June 26th and 27th. We will be accepting the first 32 teams. There will be an 8:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. shotgun start on both days. On Saturday, there will be a meal following play after both rounds. To sign-up, please call the golf shop.

From the President:

With the snow finally gone and winter a distant memory, we had a fairly descent month in March. We had nearly 700 rounds played in March, up considerably from February but still down from March of 2009. We are hoping the economy is turning around and that the weather will be conducive for more golf. There is not a lot to report from the board except we are ready for some spring weather and hopefully lots and lots of income.
I want to say THANK YOU to Rhonda Stephenson and Kay Reynolds for tackling the painting project in the restaurant. I need to mention some others that had a big part in the new paint job, Ron Reynolds, David Stephenson and Roger Senter. Thanks also go to the Ladies Auxiliary for buying the paint.
The board went into great discussion about was the pace of play and the need for marshals and/or starters on the course especially on weekends. Casey is working on some options with some of our retired members to see if we can work out some type of bargain with them. With that being said, a couple of weeks ago we had a very busy Saturday and the course got backed up. Some of the blame came from some green fee players, the other half of that blame unfortunately is with our own members. I understand the frustration with slow play, but when you play the front nine holes in 1 ½ hours because you’re the first ones out and want to make the turn with no delay, then get mad cause your back nine takes 2 to 2 ½ hours. Some of that responsibility comes back to you. I know the course belongs to the members, but we need to a little more understanding when trying to make the turn. There may be times that your groups get separated on the turn, but that is just the price we have to pay for being a 9-hole course.
As for as our daily fee players, so far they are responsible for putting nearly $9,000 in our accounts since the first of the year, and that is with us being closed nearly all of February. There is absolutely no way we can afford to exist without our daily fee players.
We would like to encourage everyone to call and make tee times and stick to them. As members we can make tee times a week in advance, leaving daily players to call on Friday to get what’s left for Saturday’s and Sunday’s. We need their income so we if are not needing some tee times let the Pro Shop know so they can fill it in with others. By doing so it keeps us from having to raise our monthly fees.
Since there are members that would like Canyon CC to be totally private, then I encourage you to help recruit new members so we have enough income to be totally private.

It was nice to see our golf course being played on for a change. What a winter we had. Merchandise is rolling in with the latest and greatest equipment. Is it time for a new driver? Come to talk to me or any of my staff and we can fill you in with what you may need. I also have the latest hybrids and golf balls. Now is the time to make an equipment change so that you can fully enjoy your new stick through the summer. May is a busy month here so be sure to check the calender and also the Latest News Bulletin on the front page of the web site (canyontxcountryclub.com).

ATO Golf Scramble
The golf course will be closed the morning of Saturday, May 1st, for the ATO Golf Scramble. We will re-open around 1:30 for regular play.

Ladies Guest Day
Ladies Guest Day is scheduled for May 6th. All ladies are invited to play in this event. We will have a 9:00 shotgun start with a meal following play. There will also be a light breakfast in the morning before play. This is a great event, all of our ladies get to show our great golf course to other women from around the panhandle.

High School Fundraiser Day/Night Tournament
The Canyon High School Golf Team Fundraiser Day/Night Tournament in scheduled for Friday, May 14th. Please be aware that the Friday Night Scramble is scheduled for that Thursday, May 13th.

Bucks & Does
The Bucks & Does Couples Scramble will be held on May 22nd and 23rd. All couples are invited to play. There will be a morning and afternoon shotgun start on both days. There will be a meal following play on Saturday for both the morning and afternoon shotguns. Cost for the tournament will be $120 per team plus the cost of a cart. This event is always fun so come on out.

Members Scrambles
The scrambles have started and are in full gear. This is a great way to meet new members and have a lot of fun with the ones you already know. Remember, the scrambles start at 6:00 and the deadline to sign-up is 4:00. The dates for the scrambles are:
May 7 – Friday
May 13th – Thursday
May 28th – Friday

Ladies Auxiliary News
Wednesday's Ladies Night is in full swing. Remember all ladies in the auxiliary are invited to play. Call in by 4:00 on Wednesday and let us know if you plan to eat so that Teresa can have a good head count. Come on out on Wednesday and enjoy the fun.

The Ladies still have raffle tickets available for the $500 gift card. These tickets will be on sale until September 3rd. Don't miss out to not only help out the Auxiliary (who do so much for the club) but a great chance to win.

Kay Reynold is the director for CCC for the Hi-Plains Ladies Play Days. The Ladies play the 2nd Wednesday of every month from April to October at different courses in our area. Cost to join the Hi-Plains Association is $15 and the cost to play that Wednesday is $35 (includes fees, carts, and lunch). Call Kay Reynolds for more information.

From the President
Well, we have finally had some decent weather for golf. The past few weeks have been fairly steady with play, nothing exceptional, but at least were bringing in some income. For the entire month of February we had basically one day of play that brought in $ 570.00 in green fees and cart rentals, other than that… February was a tough month for the Club.
Mikel and Javier are working on getting the course in shape; they have fertilized some areas and will continue to get the course ready for the spring and summer play.
The board of directors has authorized some changes to the golf course. We are proposing making modifications on our tee boxes to set the par as a 70 for both the Men and Women. It will require the course to be re-rated, but we are required to update our course rating in the next year or two. Johnnie and Cindy Guelker are looking at getting certified to do course ratings to help with our cost. We will be adding a third set of tees for both the Men & Women. This will give a slightly different look to every hole. By making these changes we will comply with the Texas Golf Association & the USGA in making Number 3 a legitimate par 5 for the ladies. The ratings guide states that a par 5 for ladies must be at least 400 yards long.
Other changes will include removing a few trees where the new tee boxes will be and leveling & mowing these areas. We are also looking at filling in both sand traps on the course. The sand traps are mainly a maintenance and aesthetic issue. It really makes no sense to have just two sand traps, either we need to add more or remove what we have. The truth being told, the majority of Board of Directors would really like to add several more sand traps however, sand traps with proper drainage (unlike number 4) cost around $5,000 to $7,000 each. Obviously this is something we cannot afford to do. These areas would be filled in to follow the natural contour of the surrounding area and seed will be put down. By the summer these areas should be completely grassed over and ready for play. Mikel, Casey and the Board are also considering letting the grass around the greens to grow a little taller, to add more emphasis on accuracy.
Again this is all being done at no additional cost to the club. Rick Dabney has agreed to cover the cost to add the one new sprinkler that we need to add and any cost associated with it (renting trencher & irrigation pipes).
With these changes, the great news is if you don’t like where the new tee box is located you can go back and continue to play the same tee box you have played for years. This is just going to give you another option. The men’s red/blue tees and the ladies yellow/white tees will pretty much remain the same with the exception of one or two holes. Therefore if you don’t like the new tees, continue playing the ones you’re used to.

From the Golf Shop
Spring is officially here (so says the calender and the goofy weathermen), although I don't agree with them yet. Eventually the sun will shine and the grass will green up and the snow of this year will be a distant memory. One thing that has been said by the weathermen is that it will be a very stormy spring. That means lots of lightning and hail. I hope that they are wrong, but in case they are not, keep in mind that if you hear thunder – lightning is near. If you are on the golf course and see any lightning please seek shelter immediately. The golf staff will be watching the radar and sounding the horn if we see any potential danger. If you hear the horn, please come back to the shop (that way we are not worried about where you could be). Remember – we aren't trying to ruin your game by bringing you in, we just want to keep you safe.

Women's Working Wednesday Play
All ladies are invited to play golf starting in April on Wednesday nights in the Women's Working Wednesday Play Day. There will be a different game every Wednesday and prizes at the end of the year. Please call the golf shop by 4:00 to sign up and play begins at 6:00. Once again, all ladies are invited to play – so come out and have a great time playing golf and meeting new friends.

Adios to Winter 3-Person Scramble
We didn't get to say “adios” to winter on the week that we wanted to. The tournament has been rescheduled to April 17th & 18th. This is the same weekend that the 2-Man Low Ball was scheduled to be on. The 2-Man Low Ball will not be played this year. Please call the golf shop if you are interested in playing (there is still room) at 499-3397.

Friday Night Scrambles
The Friday Night Scramble will begin play on April 23rd. If you are interested in playing, you need to call the golf shop by 4:00 p.m. Play begins sharply at 6:00 p.m. All members are invited to play. Teresa makes a wonderful meal following play so be sure to stick around when you are done playing. Remember to call in by 4:00 p.m.

The Friday Night Scrambles will be played on April 23rd & 30th this month. .

WT Bowlers Tournament
The WT Bowlers Fundraising Tournament is scheduled for Wednesday, April 21st h with a 12:00 shotgun. Please note that the course will be closed that afternoon till around 5:30 p.m.

Spring Aerification
We will be closed on Tuesday, March 31st for spring aerification. We will re-open Wednesday, April 1st at 8:00 a.m.

Reminders
Please be sure to fill all your divots with sand and to repair your ball marks on the green. This will help keep Canyon Country Club looking great.

Adios Postponed

From the President

It’s been a tough start to the new year, first with the bitter cold weather then all the snow; it has been pretty quiet around the golf course. We had just a little over 300 rounds of golf played in the month of January and with all the snow we had, we have not been able to open the golf course at all in February. If there is any good news to the lack of income from green fees and carts, it is definitely some much needed moisture. Come springtime we will be very thankful for the moisture from the snow.

In the meantime the board of directors is looking at ways to increase our membership and make course improvements at very little cost. Over the course of the next month or so we will be addressing these with the stockholders. I don’t foresee any of these changes being too drastic, just trying to expand on what we currently have.

A special thank to Roger Senter and Goodman Distribution for the donation and installation of 3 programmable thermostats for the clubhouse. Roger was able to get them to donate the thermostats in exchange for a couple of rounds of golf with cart, and Roger installed them on his own time. Thanks Roger for once again going above and beyond board member duties.

Let’s all hope for some better weather so we can get out there and chase that little white thing (golf ball not snow ball) around the course.

From the Golf Shop
As I am writing this, it has been a whopping 29 straight days since we have been open for play. February flew by, especially since we didn't see most of you, and I hope that the snow will eventually melt off. One good thing is that much needed moisture that the golf course is receiving. According to Mikel we have had about 20 inches of snow in the last 30 days. The golf course will look great once it gets uncovered and dry enough to play.

While the snow was on the golf course, the golf staff did a few projects. We cleaned out the closets by the south door (there were two pickup loads of junk that were thrown away) and we also filled up the cart batteries with water (ensuring that your cart won't go down once we do get to play). These are just a few things we did to fight off the boredom (which is ironic considering that these things were really boring to write about).

We did have a Super Bowl party and Jimmy Jones, Roger Senter, Johnnie Guelker, and Trish Giacomazzi were the big winners on our squares pot. It was a fun time and such a good game to watch. Thanks to Teresa for the great food she cooked and thanks to everyone who came to the party.

The Adios to Winter 3 – Person Scramble will be held on March 20th and 21st. There will be a morning and afternoon shotgun on both days. If you would like to play please call the golf shop for more information or to sign up.

Ladies Auxiliary
The Ladies Auxiliary will be meeting on Thursday, March 12th at 7:00 p.m. All ladies are invited to come and be a part of the Ladies Auxiliary

Just a quick reminder that annual dues of $16 needs to be paid by March 11th for your information to be in the ladies yearbook.

Kay Reynolds, Director from CCC for the High Plains Women's Golf Association, is attending the March meeting in Clovis to set the play dates for 2010. Play is the 2nd Wednesday of the month, April thru October. $18 to join and $35 per meet. The $35 pays for green fees, cart and the meal. Any Canyon Country Club lady golfer is eligible to join. Please contact Kay Reynolds @ 499-3310, if you are interested in joining.

From the President
I want to thank all those who attended the annual Stockholders board meeting on January 18th. Three new board members were elected to 3-year terms. The three new members are Trish Giacomazzi, Johnnie Guelker, and David Stephenson. We welcome our new members and look forward to working with them.

Some of the highlights from the stockholders meeting were:
The by-laws were amended to prohibit a private cart owner from placing any commercial advertising on their cart. This does not apply to an individuals name or the promotion of a particular school or sports team. It only applies to advertising a specific commercial business.

Stockholders approved the use of monies from the land account to pay the remainder of the advalorem taxes (approximately $4,700).

Stockholders recommended keeping dues the same until we received word on some of these grants that have been written. Speaking of grants, our grant writers have re-submitted several grants with several more to go. Keep your fingers crossed over the course of the next month or two in hopes that one or more of these come through.
As was discussed at the stockholders meeting, we need more members. I know this sounds like a broken record but the non-member green fee and cart income was down over $9,000, and our member dues income was down more than $7,000. If it weren’t for 2 outside tournaments (ATO & KA) and a tax reimbursement from a landowner we would have suffered a loss of income of more than $25,000.

Please help us in recruiting new members. Talk to your friends and co-workers, tell them what Canyon Country Club has to offer, unmatched scenery, a challenging course & outstanding members just to name a few.

Super Bowl Party
The Super Bowl Party at the club will begin at 4:30 on Sunday, February 7th. We will have plenty of food and there will be a chance for you to win some money with our annual Squares Pot. We would love to see everyone there, so don’t forget the party starts at 4:30.

Mikel’s Revenge / Beat the Pro
Our wonderful superintendent gets to play the role of the Evil Greenskeeper on Saturday, February 20th. Mikel will be setting the pins in the most difficult positions that he can find and the tees will be set way back. Find yourself a partner and see if you can stomach the six-putts that are inevitable. The format will be a two person scramble. There will be a 10 stroke handicap limit on your team. Also, there will be an optional Beat-the-Pro tournament. Mikel and I will play in the scramble, and yes we will be zero handicaps – (although many could argue that we probably need a few strokes!). The costs of the tournament will $20 for the scramble per player and an extra $10 per player for the Beat-the-Pro portion of the tournament. If you play in the Beat-the-Pro portion, you will automatically receive a $10 credit in the golf shop. If you beat Mikel and me, then you double your wager! You can’t lose! Teresa will be making dinner following play and if we can get enough people to stay, I will conduct a Handicap and Rules Seminar (this is part of the entry fee). The tournament will tee-off at 11:00 (tee times). To sign-up just call the shop and enter you and your partner.

Ladies Auxiliary
The Ladies Auxiliary will be meeting on Thursday, February 11th at 7:00 p.m. in the bar. All ladies are invited to come and be a part of the Ladies Auxiliary.

Thank You
I would like to extend a special thank you to our board members who served their term on the board the last couple of years. This is a thankless job and they deserve a big pat on the back. Thank You to Bob Lang, Frank Self, and Travis Loe. There efforts this last year and beyond have made Canyon Country Club one of the best places to play golf and be a part of. It is also nice to know that I can call on them now, even though they are not on the board anymore, if I ever need anything.

Welcome New Board Members
Trish Giacomazzi, David Stephenson, and Johnny Guelker were elected to serve three year terms at the last Stockholders Meeting in January. I look forward to working with all of them and I feel confident that they will help lead Canyon Country Club in the right direction.

I hope each and every one of you had a wonderful Christmas holiday, and that your New Year is off to a fantastic start. As we start this new year, I look forward to good news and fortune for Canyon Country Club. While we have had some difficult times in the past, I am confident that 2010 will be a terrific year for the club.

Our grant writers have been in contact with some foundations that are very interested in our situation and they (foundations) will be meeting after the first of the year to start on their 2010 awards.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank those board members that have fulfilled their term. Thanks to Bob Lang and Frank Self for their 3 years of service. Thanks also go to Travis Loe for his volunteering to serve the remainder of Frank Castleberry’s term. I am always impressed with the work our board members do on their own time and what they give to make Canyon Country Club what it is.

Just a reminder to every one that the annual stockholder meeting is on January 18th. The meeting will be at 7:00pm in the clubhouse. We will be going over the normal business reports and electing 3 new board members. There will also be discussion on the grant process and the financial stability of the club.

Happy New Year to everyone. Hope your holidays went well and were spent with the ones you love.

The Christmas Gala went very well this year. Teresa and her staff made a wonderful meal. There were 80 people this year (and it was great to see everyone there). A big thanks to Cliff Webb and his singing group for the entertainment. They did a fantastic job. Also, thanks to Wilma Higginbotham for a job well done in helping Teresa organize this event. And last, but certainly not least, thanks to Teresa for the delicious meal. I think many people will agree that Canyon Country Club has the finest chef around, and if you haven't had a chance to eat anything that she cooks (and she can cook just about anything), you need to come out and give it a try. You won't be disappointed. Thanks again Teresa and a job well done.

New Year’s Eve Party
The Club will be hosting their annual New Year’s Eve Party. The party will start on December 31st at 7:00 p.m. The club will furnish snacks and finger foods. This is always a fun time so we hope to see everyone there. If you have any questions regarding the party, please call the golf shop at 499-3397 ext. 21.

Polar Bear Golf Tournament
Our annual Polar Bear Golf Tournament will be held on January 30th and 31st. We will shotgun start at 11:00 a.m. both days. The format is a two person scramble. Hopefully the weather will be good, so grab a partner and get the year started off right.

Stockholder’s Meeting
The annual Stockholder’s meeting will be held on Monday, January 18th at 7:00 p.m. I encourage all stockholders to come down for the meeting. A letter will be out around the first of January explaining the agenda of the meeting. Please come down and show your support of the club.

2010 Tournament Schedule
The 2010 Tournament Schedule will be available at the Stockholder's Meeting. It will also be available online at www.canyontxcountryclub.com. If you would like a copy of the tournament schedule please give me a call and we will mail you one after the stockholder's meeting.

Happy New Year
The staff at Canyon Country Club would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! My golfing resolution this year is to become a better putter. My putting costs me 3 to 4 strokes a round. I plan on really working on that part of my game this year. What costs you any unnecessary strokes during your round? Where do you think that you could become better in your golf game? Is it your short game or maybe off the tee? These are some questions to consider while there is snow on the ground and its really cold outside. If there is any way that I can help, don't hesitate to call me. See you on the course, hopefully soon when the snow melts and it warms up!

From the President
It’s hard to believe we come to the end of another year. We have some seen some very positive changes over the course of the last 12 months, and we are optimistically looking for even more changes in the coming year.

While nothing is final yet, we have had some very good responses from some of the grants that we have sent out. We should not be discouraged as I have said before, we are at the end of a lot of foundations fiscal year but we will continue to work to find assistance. My hope is by our annual stockholders meeting will have some good news for everyone.

One item that the grant committee is looking into is to look for some funding to rebuild the clubhouse and Proshop. Dick Archer and the grant committee are putting together ideas that we might consider as possible floor plans. If you have any ideas that you feel that needs to be looked into, please let someone know. As we get closer to a “final floor plan” that we would like to submit to the grant writers we will keep everyone informed.

At the last regular board meeting the Board of Directors approved Mikel’s request to go cart path only during the winter months. We realize that this may be an inconvenience to some people but it will make for a much healthier fairway next spring.

Don’t forget the Canyon CC Christmas party on December 12th, mark your calendars and join us for a holiday dinner and entertainment.

Happy Holidays from all of the staff at your Canyon Country Club. I hope everyone had a great golfing year and has an even better one next year. I would like to thank, once again, Mikel Walser and his crew, for their hard work all year long. I personally think that we have the best 9 hole facility in the state and with out their hard work that would not be possible. Remember that you can do your part in helping them out by sanding your divots and repairing your ball marks on the green.

Christmas Open House

I will be hosting my annual Christmas Open House on December 12th. All merchandise in the shop will be marked down and you will have chance to win an even bigger discount on the items that you would like to purchase. There will be free gift wrapping, holiday treats and spirits, and good prices on quality merchandise. This will also be a good time to clear all that credit that you have won throughout the year. Don’t forget – the sales starts at 9:00 a.m.

Ladies Auxiliary Christmas Party

The Annual Ladies Auxiliary Christmas party will be held on December 7th at 6:00 p.m. All ladies are invited to attend (you do not have to be a member of the auxiliary). Please bring a covered dish for dinner and a $15.00 gift for exchange. Please put your name on the gift so that the person receiving it will know who it is from. Remember – the fun starts at 6:00 and lasts until 9:00.

Canyon Country Club’s Christmas Gala

On Saturday, December 12th, everyone is invited to the Christmas Gala. Dinner will start at 6:00 p.m. Teresa is making us a wonderful Christmas dinner, which includes pork tenderloin, cranberry sauce, rosemary potatoes, broccoli salad, dinner rolls, and a chocolate dessert. Cost will be $10.00 per person and guests are welcome. Please RSVP Wilma Higginbotham at 622-3405 or email her at shelbywilma@amaonline.com and let her know if you can make it. There will be entertainment by Cliff Webb's singing group (who are very good) and there will be a few games played after dinner. Please bring a $2.00 scratch off ticket for each person. There will also be smoking and nonsmoking areas designated. We hope to see everyone here at the club for what will be a wonderful meal and a great time.

From the President

With fall in full swing and winter knocking on the door there is still lots of opportunity to play golf and enjoy our beautiful surroundings. With the coming of winter I would like to ask everyone to be more aware with your cart. Try to stay on the paths as much as possible. The Board of Directors is not making it mandatory (at this time) to remain on cart paths at all times, just making a suggestion. The less we drive on the fairway, the better our course will be next spring. I know I am guilty of still using the 90-degree rule at times, so I myself need to be a little more attentive when playing.

Just to keep you up to date, our Grant Committee is still meeting, and working on club projects. The grant writers are still very positive about the possibilities we have in getting some of these grants. They feel we are very close in getting the Emergency 911 phone for the swimming pool and have a couple of prospects in landing some help in paying off our Small Business Loan and even paying off our equipment lease. Hopefully we will know something before the end of the year.

The only other new business is, we are working on a nominating committee to help in locating new potential board members for the upcoming stockholders annual meeting. If you are interested in serving on the board get with Casey, Courtney or let one of our current board members know.

Ladies Auxiliary

The Ladies Auxiliary will be decorating the club for Christmas on Saturday, November 21^st at 2:00 p.m. Everyone is welcomed to come and help out, we would love to see you all there.

The annual Christmas part will be held on Monday, December 7^th. Please bring a covered dish and a $15.00 gift.

The Ladies will be meeting throughout the winter starting November 4th to play Bunco, and will be playing the 1st Wednesdays of each month. If we get a good crowd, we may play twice a month starting in January. Please call before 4 to let Theresa know if you are eating (she is making a special trip out to cook for the ladies). Dinner starts at 6pm, bunco 7pm, $5.00 to play. Come out for a good time!

Tournament season is over. Hope everyone had a great golf season. Now that the grass is turning brown, remember that there are several things that you can do to help the course through the winter. Remember to sand all divots, repair your pitch marks on the greens, and to stay on the cart path for as long as you can. Cart compaction can have a direct effect of the quality of turf that we have in the spring. Remember to do these things to help Mikel keep our course looking great.

From the President

First I want to try and keep everyone up to date on the grant writers. While we don’t have any grant money in hand at this very moment we are getting closer everyday. One grant that has already been submitted is for an emergency telephone (required by State law) at the swimming pool. The phone must be able to call 911 in the event of an emergency, 7 days a week 365 days a year, even thought the pool is closed 9 months a year (again state law). The grant is for the purchase of the phone and for the monthly monitoring fees for one year. This grant alone can save us hundreds of dollars. Other grants are still in progress. We have received bids from some paving companies to re-pave our roads and parking lots and the grant writers are currently working on finding sources of income for those. One thing that we are running up against is timing. A lot of the grants that are out there have deadlines of October 1^st, so we are running out of time. The good news is our grant writers will continue their efforts after the first of the year when new grants are announced.

The “Party on the Patio” was a huge success. There were lots of people in attendance and tons of good food. I would also like to thank all those who donated money (we raised over $1,500) for the grant writers. The Ladies Auxiliary made a large donation of $500 towards the fee. Special thanks also goes to Bob and Debbie Lang for emceeing the night and buying the beer, Lynn Johnston for covering the cost of cooking the fajitas, and Clarence Vaughn for his “fundraising abilities”. I know there are many others who helped put on this event, but these folks went a little above and beyond.

The next thing I want to address is the condition of our course. The board of directors recently received an anonymous letter. While they were positive comments in some areas there was much ridicule. I know there are places that need improvement, but look at what has been done. The right side of number 4 was re-done last year and the right side of number 2 was re-done this year. The board of directors and the entire staff of Canyon CC are constantly trying to make this club the best it can be for the least amount of money. I would like to encourage our members who have a little extra time to offer to run a mower for Mikel and mow some of these areas that are being complained about, bring a chain saw there is plenty of tree trimming that needs to be done. You can always offer to help clean up the creeks along the course. There are plenty of opportunities for everyone to pitch in and help make CCC a better course. We will get with Mikel and Casey and come up with a list of small of chores that need to be done, and members can volunteer their time and resources to help out the club. We would love to be able to hire additional staff for some of these tasks, but unfortunately we (the Club) barely make it month to month. We are doing the best that we can with what we have to work with.

I love the fact that we live in a democratic state where people can express their views without fear of persecution, but please come to me or another board member or talk to Casey in person about this one on one. Don’t send an anonymous letter belittling our club, come to a board meeting or call someone, lets work together to make Canyon CC a place we can all be proud of. As for our anonymous letter writer, I would love to sit down and discuss some of your ideas so please call me.

The Senior Partnership will be held on October 10^th & 11^th. This is open to men who are 50 years old or older. The first day will be a scramble and the second day will be low ball. Flights will be determined by your combined handicap. Call the golf shop to sign up your team or for more information.

The Ryder Cup was held at the end of September. The Men's side won this years contest, however, there were a lot of close matches and it really could have gone either way. Thanks to everyone who played and we will see everyone again next year.

Congratulations to Red Higginbotham for winning the 19-Man Shootout. He beat out a tough field this year to win the title. Jim Giacomazzi was second, Jim Farmer was third, Stan Price was fourth and Bob Lang was fifth. Thanks to everyone who played.

The Robert C. Burton 3-Man Scramble was a great success this year. Thanks to the Burton family for donating money for the meals for the weekend. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to everyone who played.

Winter time is coming up. Remember to stay on the cart path as long as possible when driving a golf cart. Also, please remember to fix your pitch marks on the greens and to sand all of your divots in the fairways. Thanks for making Canyon Country Club a great place to be a part of.

From the President
It’s hard to imagine that summer has come and gone. We’ve had some ups and downs but overall it’s been a good summer and we are keeping our head above water.

With the end of summer comes the closing of the swimming pool. We closed the pool on August 23rd, we felt it was not cost effective to try and keep the pool operational during the week just to be open on Saturday and Sunday until Labor Day. We also lost one of our lifeguards to college so it was going to be hard to fill the spots with one less lifeguard. We estimated that we had over 1000 visitors to the swimming pool this past summer, that’s a lot of swimmers.

The Board of Directors met with a grant writer this past week, and we are very hopeful we can find some “free” money to help with course or facility improvements, and maybe help pay for some repaving of our roads within Canyon CC. We don’t know what kind of grants are out there, but the grant writer will explore every avenue possible.

We have formed a committee to head the exploration of the different grant options out there and what improvements we can make for the club. This committee will look at improving our roads, checking on the possibilities of repairing our well system, and even paying off our old SBA loan. This is only the start, with many other options on down the road. Right now we are in the process of getting our committee together, Dick Archer will be the Chairman with the committee members being, Wilma Higginbotham, Sue Herring, Joe Godfrey, Cindy Senter, Kyle Farmer. Other members may be appointed at a later time.

I know nearly everyone would love to see an additional 9-holes added, and that can be something we will look into, but we are going to prioritize some of our more pressing needs, then as we go on we will look at more improvements. The cost to hire this grant writer is $2,500 (she is giving us a ½ priced discount). We are glad accepting donations to help defray this cost. I know some people may think this $2,500 could be spent on some of these projects, but she assures us she will find us grant money to help cover the cost of some of these other larger tasks. I feel very comfortable that this will be money well spent. If you have any suggestions or would like to serve on the committee let me, any of the other board members or any committee members know.

It was a great summer this year. The weather never got to hot, we got a little bit of rain (keep your fingers crossed for more), and the golf course has never looked better. If you get a chance to see Mikal and his crew, be sure to tell him what a great job they have been doing.

The Ladies Chaparral was a big success this year. We had 28 teams from not only our club, but from all over the panhandle. Congratulations to Cindy Guelker and Kelli Mooring for winning first in the championship flight, Lori O'Loughlin and Kim Davis for placing third in the second flight, and Karen Steward and her partner, Gayle Brasher, for coming in second in the third flight.

The Super Scramble will be held August 30th with a 1:00 shotgun.This our year end member scramble. There will be over $1200 in prize money and possible skin money to be had. If you are interested in playing please call the shop to sign-up.

Hi-Plains Ladies Play Day will be held at CCC on Wednesday, September 9th. This will be a 9:00 shotgun start and regular play will start at 2:00 p.m.

The 19-Man Shootout is a fun event. It will be held on Sunday, September 13th. I will take the first 19 men to sign-up by the 12th of September. Cost is $10, so come out and enjoy the fun.

The Robert C. Burton 3-Man Scramble will be held on September 19th & 20th. There will be a morning and afternoon shotgun start on both days. To sign-up your team or if you have any questions, please call the golf shop.

The Ryder Cup Matches will begin on Saturday the 26th and end on Sunday the 27th. This is a fun event with the women versus the men. The men have won the last three years – but I’m sure the ladies will come out fighting to regain the cup. Every member is invited to play in this regardless of ability. If you would like to play or have any questions, please call the golf shop.

We will be closed on Monday, August 31st for fall aerfication. We will re-open on Tuesday at 10:00 for normal play.

We hope to see everyone on the golf course this fall. Remember that this is your club, so be proud to be a member. Remember to fix all your pitch marks on the greens, sand your divots in the fairways, and help keep us clean by picking up any stray trash you see lying around. Let's make sure that Canyon Country Club the best golf club in this area.

This past month I played in the Club Championship. Believe it or not, it was my first time to play in the Championship. In years past either there was a scheduling conflict on my part or I didn’t feel like I was good enough to play. But I must say it was a lot of fun and very enjoyable. The horserace was exciting and nerve racking - not to brag but my team did win the horserace, (good job Cindy Guelker & Red Higginbotham). I want to thank Wayne and Beverly Johnson for the hard work and outstanding Bar-B-Q. I know Wayne and his sons were cooking most of the day and because of their generosity we raised over $600 for the club. Also bringing in some money was the dessert auction. It was very successful and we raised a little over $500 for the club just from cakes and pies. That weekend was a great time enjoying golf, food and fellowship with other members of the club. I want to encourage everyone next year to come and participate.
In other club business, the board is meeting with a grant writer to see if there is some funding to improve either the facilities or the course itself. We will explore several different projects, like building a new clubhouse and Proshop, building a new cart barn, improving the roads within the club, and course improvements. All this is very premature, but we wanted to let you know the board is constantly looking for ways to improve our club. We will keep you updated on any possible changes and invite you to attend the next board meeting and let us know what you think and how you would use the money to improve the club.
I would also like to ask our members to show their appreciation to the employees of Canyon Country Club. Our employees go above and beyond their duties most of the time, just to make members happy. They hear complaints from members about: the condition of the course or what they think the greens crew should be doing. People complain to the Pro Shop staff about slow play or who someone was pared with on a Friday night, and to the bartenders about their drink not being strong enough. This is only a sample of what they hear on a daily basis. Some of these employees work 10-12 hours a day, 6 or 7 days a week and they also want the best for our club. I think we all need to make a conscious effort to show them our appreciation for the work they do.

The Club Championship was a great success this year. Not only did the tournament go well, the fundraising activities for the club went well also. The desert auction brought in $530.00 for the club and Wayne and Beverly Johnson's Bar-B-Que brought in over $600.00. That is over $1,100.00 for the club to use on various projects for the club. Thanks to all the ladies who made the wonderful deserts, everyone who bought and donated money for the deserts, and a big thanks to the Johnson group for the hard work and time.

Ryan Neufeld won a close match over Johnnie Guelker this year in our championship match for the Men's Club Championship. Trish Giacomazzi won her second straight Women's Club Championship. From the President:

I can’t believe what a difference a fresh coat of paint makes. I think everyone will agree that our faded, beat up looking Clubhouse and Pro Shop looks 100% better.

Business around the course has been pretty steady here lately; some weeks have been very profitable for the club while other weeks have not. In the month of May we had total of 1585 rounds of golf played, with two tournaments (Bucks & Does and the Grandmothers). The Kid’s Inc day/night tournament scheduled for June 20th was rained out and will likely be re-scheduled for sometime in August. This should not affect our members because they will not start until 6:00pm on a Saturday evening.

I know this is redundant but I want to say Thank You to all of our employees. They do a lot of behind the scene work that most will never see. Casey and the Pro Shop staff continue to offer outstanding customer service. I don’t think most people realize how much they do for our club. We are working on ways to update the Pro Shop and details will be forthcoming.

Mikel & his staff are continuing to improve conditions on the golf course. They have hydro-mulched several areas, and the grass is really coming in good. Number 6 & 8 greens have come in very well, with the sodding and extra care they have received. Without a doubt the golf course is in excellent condition.

From the land committee, there are only 2 lots left on the south rim overlooking the clubhouse, and 4 on the north side. If you are interested in any of these lots contact Dick Archer for the details.

From the Golf Shop

The heat is here finally. We have had a pretty mild summer up until now. Keep praying for rain, the course still needs it. There are several things going on in July and August. First, we will be open for regular play on Saturday, July 4th. If you want to play that day, call early in the week and get your tee time. Non-members will be able to get a tee-time on Friday.

The course will be closed on Monday, June 29th so that Mikel and his crew can spray our greens with a chemical that is considered very toxic. As soon as Mikel gets the greens sprayed, he will water it in. As soon as that is done, then it will be safe to be on the greens again, but we want to ensure your safety, so we will re-open on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m.

NTPGA Jr. Tournament
Once again, Canyon Country Club is honored to host a Northern Texas PGA Jr. Tour event. The event will be held on July 9th. We are expecting around 60 kids to play our wonderful golf course. The course will open back up around 2:00 p.m.

Club Championship
Our club championship will be held July 11th & 12th. The format for the men will be match play and for the ladies will be stroke play (gross & net). I encourage all members to participate in this event. If you would like to sign-up for the club championship please call the golf shop. Starting times will be determined on Friday, July 10th.

After the morning round on Saturday, the Ladies Auxiliary will have a bake sale. The members of the Ladies Auxiliary will bring home made desserts to be auctioned off. All proceeds will go to the Auxiliary. The Auxiliary has done some fantastic things around the clubhouse with the money that they receive. The fun should start around 1:30 p.m. So come on out, even if you aren't playing in the tournament.

After the bake sale we will have our annual Man-Woman Shoot-out. This is always a fun event where the players in the tournament are paired up with each other (no husband-wife teams) and we have a 9-hole shoot-out.

When that is over with, Wayne & Beverly Johnson will be having his annual Bar-b-que. The Johnson family will be out cooking bar-b-que all day and they do a wonderful job. The meal is inexpensive and really good. All the proceeds that the Johnson's make goes back to the club. Bring out your family and enjoy some great food and fun. The bar-b-que should start around 6:30 p.m.

Roadrunner Invitational
Our biggest tournament of the year is July 24th through the 276h. All members should have received an invitation. Included in the invitation was a tee-box sponsor sheet. If you or someone you know is interested in helping sponsor this event then please mail back the sponsor sheet to the club. Thanks for your support and thanks for playing.

Pro-Member
Canyon Country Club’s annual Pro-Member will be held on Monday, August 3rd. I have many professionals from around the panhandle already signed up to play in the event. From the President:

I would like to say Thank You to all who turned out to help with what is becoming the annual CCC clean up day. Some people pulled weeds, others pushed brooms and power washed the patio or just pitched in wherever they could. On May 2nd we were able to remove the old storage building that was once was used for an old swimming pool. It took several people nearly 3 hours to remove it. Others also cleaned up behind the cart barn, and hauled away several loads of scraps. Old TV antennas were also taken down. All in all the buildings look much better, and just in time for our new paint job. By the time you receive your newsletter the building will have a fresh coat of paint and will hopefully be something everyone can be proud of.

I also want to say thank you to those who donated to the “Paint the Clubhouse” fund. With the support of quite a few of our members we have raised several hundred dollars towards this project. While we haven’t completely covered the total cost of the painting project, we have worked out a deal with a local painter.

We have other ideas to improve the look of the club but we can only do these as time & money allows.

After several hours of work the swimming pool is up and running. The hours for the swimming pool will be from 1:00pm to 7:00pm seven days a week. If you are interested in reserving the pool for a private pool party, contact Courtney for a request form. Also we are now requiring 2 lifeguards on all parties of 15 or more people.

Summer has arrived. We got some much need rainfall over Memorial Day Weekend. The golf course is coming in very nicely. The fairways are still a little thin, so be sure to stay on the cart paths as long as possible. The less cart traffic we have on these old bermuda fairways the better they will look.

I would like to thank everyone who donated money to the “Paint the Clubhouse and Pro Shop Fund”. The painting should be done be the time the Bucks & Does starts. I think it will look great and we could not have done it without the generosity of our members. Thanks again.

Bucks & Does

The Bucks & Does Couples Scramble will be held on May 30th and 31st. All couples are invited to play. There will be a morning and afternoon shotgun start on both days. There will be a meal following play on Saturday. Cost for the tournament will be $120 per team plus the cost of a cart. This event is always fun so come on out.

Members Scrambles

The scrambles have started and are in full gear. This is a great way to meet new members and have a lot of fun with the ones you already know. Remember, the scrambles start at 6:00 and the deadline to sign-up is 4:00. The dates for the scrambles are:

Grandmother’s Tournament

The Grandmother’s Tournament will be held on June 4th. The tournament starts at 9:00 a.m. with breakfast starting at 8:00 a.m. The course will open around 2:00 p.m. that day. To sign-up for the tournament please call the shop.

Frank Self’s Pig Roast / Kids Inc. Day – Night Tournament

Frank’s annual Pig Roast will be held on Saturday, June 20th. After the Pig Roast – the annual Kid’s Inc. Day-Night Tournament will start at 6:00 p.m. The course will be closed all day for these two events.

Doubles Couples Scramble

The Doubles Couples Tournament will be held on June 27th and 28th. We will be accepting the first 32 teams. There will be an 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. shotgun start on both days. On Saturday, there will be a meal and Calcutta following play. To sign-up, please call the golf shop.

Women's Water Aerobics

The instructor that taught the class last summer, Cindy Meador, is available to teach Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 p.m. To 8 p.m. If anyone is interested, come to the pool on Thursday, June 4th for further information or call Babe King at 499-3372 or Betty Johnson at 499-3859.

The Friday night scrambles are in full swing, it’s a lot of fun getting out and meeting other members of the club. I want to encourage everyone to come and play on Friday nights.

I want to remind everyone that we are going to be painting the exterior of the clubhouse and pro-shop on May 2nd. The course is closed that morning until 2:00pm for an outside tournament so there is no reason our member’s cannot come out and help. We will start painting at 9:00am so bring your painting supplies and help beautify our facility. If you have any ladders that you can bring that would also be helpful. Some areas are going to be difficult to reach without a ladder or some type of scaffolding. Thanks also to those who have donated to the “paint the clubhouse fund” so far we have raised nearly $300 towards the purchase of paint.

Mikel & Javier are working on some projects to help with the condition of the course. They have installed a sprinkler system and will be seeding or hydro mulching the area between number 6 fairway and number 7 green. As soon as they get this area finished they are heading over to number 2 fairway, to do some more irrigation and seeding or hydro mulching. Next up is the green on # 6 and # 8. They are waiting for more consentient warm weather to re-sod some of areas that were hit with disease last year.

Casey and they pro shop staff continue to offer great customer service and a large variety of merchandise in the shop. They also have many catalogs for that hard to find item or apparel.

From the Golf Shop

Hope everyone is having a nice spring. The golf course is coming in nicely. Thanks to everyones' effort for staying on the cart path. Many people may be wondering why we stay on the cart paths for so long. There are one simple explanation, cart traffic causes compaction of the turf. When it is dry and the grass is dormant, by driving over the grass, we are doing severe damage to the grass. There can be damage to the roots and this can cause the grass to not come in healthy. It is best for the grass in the fairway to not have any traffic at all until the grass is healthy enough to absorb all of the traffic. So, in short, it may be just a little longer until we are able to get off the paths, but the fairways will look and play a lot better because of the efforts and sacrifices we have made this winter and early spring. May is a busy month. Please check the calendar for all of our upcoming events.

ATO Golf Scramble
The golf course will be closed the morning of Saturday, May 2nd, for the ATO Golf Scramble. We will re-open around 1:30 for regular play. This is a great opportunity for you to come help out with the work day in the morning, eat a great lunch with Teresa, then still be able to get in 18 holes that afternoon.

Ladies Guest Day

Ladies Guest Day is scheduled for May 7th. All ladies are invited to play in this event. We will have a 9:00 shotgun start with a meal following play. There will also be a light breakfast in the morning before play. This is a great event, all of our ladies get to show our great golf course to other women from around the panhandle.

High School Fundraiser Day/Night Tournament

The Canyon High School Golf Team Fundraiser Day/Night Tournament in scheduled for Friday, May 15th. Please be aware that the Friday Night Scramble is scheduled for that Thursday, May 14th.

Bucks & Does

The Bucks & Does Couples Scramble will be held on May 30th and 31st. All couples are invited to play. There will be a morning and afternoon shotgun start on both days. A Calcutta and meal will follow play on Saturday. Cost for the tournament will be $120 per team plus the cost of a cart. This event is always fun so come on out.

Members Scrambles

The scrambles have started and are in full gear. This is a great way to meet new members and have a lot of fun with the ones you already know. Remember, the scrambles start at 6:00 and the deadline to sign-up is 4:00. The dates for the scrambles are:
May 1st – Friday
May 8th – Friday
May 14th – Thursday
May 22nd – Friday

Don't forget about our Player of the Year Points that accumulate each time you play. You receive 5 points for participating and then points depending on how well your team does each night. 1st place receives a driver, 2nd place wins a bag, and 3rd place wins a putter. Check our website for how you are doing in the points race. We will try to update it every week starting in May.

The weather seems to be getting better everyday (except for the wind). I hope everyone has taken advantage of the mild winter and played some golf. The only thing we need now is some much-needed moisture.
I would like to take this opportunity to say a big Thank You to Kay Reynolds & Rhonda Stephenson for the outstanding work they did in painting the inside of the clubhouse. They definitely went out of their way and did a fantastic job. Thanks also goes to Roger Senter, Cindy Senter, Red Higginbotham, Ron Reynolds, David Stephenson and the Pro Shop staff; Casey and Zach for their help in installing the new ceiling fans and doing some painting themselves. It really makes the room more inviting. Thanks again Kay and Rhonda.
All that work brings up my next point. We have scheduled a paint and clean-up day for May 2nd. The main goal is to paint the outside of the clubhouse and Pro Shop. We would love to have lots of people there to help in this major undertaking. Just for information, there is an outside tournament that morning so the course will be closed until 1:00pm or so. The bad news for everyone is we’ve taken away an excuse for you not to help. We will probably use rollers and brushes to paint it so if you have extra supplies bring them along. I realize we could use airless sprayers and it would go much faster, the problem is the wind and the fact that the parking lot will be full of cars for the tournament. I don’t think we need to take the chance of getting paint splatter on the vehicles. If you would like to make a financial donation to the “paint the clubhouse & pro-shop fund” you can drop it off with Casey or Courtney. Some members of the ladies auxiliary have already donated $100 to the cause. In addition to painting the buildings we will possibly take on a few other projects that day so if painting is not your thing we can find something for you to do.
While some of you might say, I pay my dues to have someone else do this type of work, think of the image we can have on this outside group coming to play our course that day. Since we all agree that we need more members, what better impression can we make by coming together as a Club to help beautify our facility and to show them our “family” atmosphere.
I wanted to take just a moment to share the results of the survey that was sent out last month. Of the 144 members (stock & associate), we received 62 of the back. Without going into took much detail of all the findings I will just highlight a few things right now, and we will have more information later on. As the subject of what members would like to see done at CCC, expanding to an 18-hole facility received the most #1 votes with 18, second was course improvement with 17 #1 votes, doing nothing at all was next with 13, followed by improving the structures with 7 and going private on weekends received 6 votes. Going totally private did not receive any first choice votes.
On the financial side of the survey, 21 members stated they wanted no additional dues as their first option; the $10-$30 & $30-$50 both received 13 each and $50-$70 received 8 votes as their #1 choice and 4 people stated $70 or more increase.
The board of directors will look over the surveys and the comments that were made and try to develop a course of action to recommend that will serve the entire membership.
Remember to keep May 2nd on your calendar to pitch in and be a part of Canyon Country Club.

Friday Night Scrambles
Friday Night Scrambles start on April 10th. Sign-up by 4:00 and we start at 6:00. The scrambles are on the 10th (Fri.) and the 24th (Fri.).
There are going to be a few changes this year in the scrambles. First, when there is a weekend tournament we will not have a scramble that week. I have noticed through my three years that when we have Thursday scrambles, participation is low. We do still have some scrambles on Thursday, be sure to check the calender for these dates.
Also, this year we will be an ongoing competition throughout the whole summer. Each time you sign-up and play in a scramble you will receive five points. Then, points will be awarded by how your team places in the weekly event. For example, Joe Member plays on Friday and his team finishes first among ten other teams. Joe Member will receive five points for playing and and additional ten points for being on the first place team (as will all of his teammates). There will be prizes for our players that finish in the top five. I hope that this will encourage everyone to play in more of our scrambles and I think it will make it fun. If you have any questions, please call the golf shop.
WT Bowlers Tournament
The WT Bowlers Fundraising Tournament is scheduled for Wednesday, April 15th with a 12:00 shotgun. This was not on your original tournament schedule but was approved by the Board of Directors. Please note that the course will be closed that afternoon till around 5:30 p.m.
2-Man Low Ball
The 2-Man Low Ball will be held on April 18h& 19th. There will be a morning and afternoon shotgun both day with a meal on Saturday and a Calcutta. Teams will be flighted by your combined handicap. Call the pro shop to sign-up.

Annual Men's Golf Trip
This year's annual golf trip will be to Trinidad, Colorado. The dates for the trip will be June 5th – 7th. We will be playing Cougar Canyon (a Jack Nicklaus design) on Friday afternoon and Sunday morning. We will play Grandote Golf Club on Saturday. The total cost of the trip is $400 (this includes golf and hotel). If you are interested in going please call the golf shop or Derek Jones at 336-4533 for more information.

Congrats!
Our long time employee of the club and good friend, Robert King, is getting married to his fiancé, Rebekah Foss, on Saturday, March 28th. Robert and Beka will honeymoon in Las Vegas the following week. Congratulations and good luck on your new life together.

I would like to welcome Dick Archer, Rick Dabney, and Roger Senter to the Board of Directors. I look forward to serving with them and I look forward to making Canyon Country Club the best course in the panhandle.

At the annual stockholders meeting, it seemed the common theme for our success is increasing membership. The board has implemented a “Membership Drive” for a limited time to get new members. The plan for new joining associate members is they pay their first month’s dues and a $50 initiation fee (no longer first and last months dues). The initiation fee can also be waived if the new member signs up for automatic draft. We are still working on an incentive for stock members. We need every member of Canyon Country Club to recruit just one new member.

One thing that came up at our board meeting was the issue of our golf carts. While there is no perfect answer to the problems we have encountered, we can be thankful that our damage has been minimal. The only damage our carts have suffered in the course of nearly one full year of use is we had one U-frame bent. The board would like to remind all members to be cautious when using the carts. If you see someone whom you think is abusing a cart, be polite and say something to him or her, don’t yell across the course. If you do not feel comfortable with doing that, call the Pro Shop and hopefully they will have someone available to go out and talk to them.

The club is on the lookout for a brush/tree chipper. Mikel and the guys are constantly trimming and cutting down trees and chipping them would be more beneficial than hauling the limbs off to a brush cutting site or even disposing them on the 42 acres we have for sale. If you know where we can get one for a decent price let one of the board members know.

By now you also received a detailed letter and survey about what you would like to see at our club. Please take the time to fill out the survey and mail it back as soon as possible. We will compile the data and inform the members of our findings.

Ladies Auxiliary
The Ladies Auxiliary will be meeting on Thursday, March 12th at 7:00 p.m. All ladies are invited to come and be a part of the Ladies Auxiliary

The first official Wednesday Ladies Night is April 8th. Starting this year, we are asking that you contact the golf shop (499-3397) by 4 p.m. This will allow Casey to set up the teams in advance. Also, we are asking that you let Casey know if you would like to eat dinner afterwards, so Theresa can have an accurate head count for supper.

The Ladies will start selling raffle tickets soon for our September drawing. Money from the raffle goes to improvements for the club. One of the improvements made recently was the new ceiling fans in the bar and foyer area. They look great.

From the President
As I finished my first year serving you as President, I look back at some of the accomplishments we have made. When I say we, I mean the board of directors, the employees and every member of Canyon Country Club. Even though the board of directors tackles the everyday obstacles of the club, it takes everyone to make this club what it is. Many people have gone above and beyond their responsibilities to help out, by trimming trees and picking up limbs, painting the swimming pool, working on electrical problems in the clubhouse and many other countless things. This past year we have developed & maintained a web site, irrigated & planted grass in many areas of the golf course, opened up 8 home sites (4 of which have been sold), and purchased & paid for in full 32 brand new golf carts (something that has never been done before).

As we start this new year, I can only imagine what changes are in store for our club. At the annual stockholders meeting there were a few suggestions of what our members would like to see happen. My question to all stockholders; what are your goals or ideas for improving our club? How can we increase our membership? What changes would you like to see take place? I encourage you to get involved, voice your opinions and offer suggestions. You are welcome to attend the board meetings, which are the second Monday of each month, ask questions or just sit back and listen. Feel free to call any of the board members to offer your comments or suggestions.

We discussed at the annual stockholders meeting, that financially times are tough and who knows if there is an end insight. The best way for our club to become more financially stable is either to increase our membership pool or increase our dues. As we found out Monday evening, increasing our dues was something no one wanted to discuss. So please talk up our club to friends and invite them to play golf with you. We have room for several more memberships.

In closing, play golf as much as you can, enjoy the beauty of our course, encourage new memberships, and take pride in your course.

Super Bowl Party
The Super Bowl Party at the club will begin at 4:30 on Sunday, February 1st. We will have plenty of food and there will be a chance for you to win some money with our annual Squares Pot. We would love to see everyone there, so don’t forget the party starts at 4:30.

Mikel’s Revenge / Beat the Pro
Our wonderful superintendent gets to play the role of the Evil Greenskeeper on Sunday, February 22nd. Mikel will be setting the pins in the most difficult positions that he can find and the tees will be set way back. Find yourself a partner and see if you can stomach the six-putts that are inevitable. The format will be a two person scramble. There will be a 10 stroke handicap limit on your team. Also, there will be an optional Beat-the-Pro tournament. I will play in the scramble, with a partner(and yes we will be zero handicaps – although many could argue that we probably need a few strokes!). The costs of the tournament will $20 for the scramble per player and an extra $10 per player for the Beat-the-Pro portion of the tournament. If you play in the Beat-the-Pro portion, you will automatically receive a $10 credit in the golf shop. If you beat my team, then you double your wager! You can’t lose! Teresa in the grill will do a Brunch Buffet on that morning (this is part of the entry fee) starting at 10:00 and the tournament will tee-off at 11:00 (tee times). To sign-up just call the shop and enter you and your partner.

Ladies Auxiliary
The Ladies Auxiliary will be meeting on Thursday, February 12th at 7:00 p.m. in the grill. All ladies are invited to come and be a part of the Ladies Auxiliary.

I would like to extend a special thank you to our board members who served their term on the board the last couple of years. This is a thankless job and they deserve a big pat on the back. Thank You to Charlie McClure and Joe Randal. There efforts this last year and beyond have made Canyon Country Club one of the best places to play golf and be a part of.

Happy New Year to everyone. Hope your holidays went well and were spent with the ones you love. The Christmas Party was a lot of fun and we hope to see everyone here for the New Year's Eve Party.
The New Year is a good time to start thinking about your golf for the next season. If your New Year’s resolution is to become a better golfer, I would be glad to help you in any way. I am usually always available for a series of lessons or just a quick tune-up for your game. I also will have the latest equipment for sale and I can help you decide what would be best for you.

New Year’s Eve Party
The Club will be hosting their annual New Year’s Eve Party. The party will start on December 31st at 7:00 p.m. The club will furnish snacks and finger foods. This is always a fun time so we hope to see everyone there. Don’t forget to bring your dancing shoes, because we will have music for you all to cut a rug.

Polar Bear Golf Tournament
Our annual Polar Bear Golf Tournament will be held on January 24th and 25th. We will shotgun start at 11:00 a.m. both days. The format is a two person scramble. Hopefully the weather will be good, so grab a partner and get the year started off right.

Stockholder’s Meeting
The annual Stockholder’s meeting will be held on Monday, January 19th at 7:00 p.m. I encourage all stockholders to come down for the meeting. A letter will be out around the first of January explaining the agenda of the meeting. Please come down and show your support of the club.

From the President
Well I can honestly say it’s been an enlightening year. It’s been fun at times, stressful at others, but overall I have really enjoyed serving as President. I would like to thank our Board Members for their service this past year, and I look forward to the challenges we will face in the coming months and years.

I especially want to thank Joe Randal, Charlie McClure and Dick Archer for their service. Joe and Charlie have completed their 3-year term and Dick finished the unexpired time on a previous board member. Although Dick is leaving his name in the hat for the 3 positions that we will vote on in January at the annual Stock Holders Board Meeting. Without the enthusiastic devotion of our Board of Directors, Canyon Country Club would struggle to survive.

With that being said, our nominating committee is still taking nominations for next year’s vacancies. If you are interested please contact one of the committee members, Casey or Courtney.

This past month has been a good month for the club. Even though the amount of golfing income has drastically dropped off, there have been other accomplishments. We have sold 4 of the 8 lots that are located off the south rim of the canyon overlooking the Clubhouse and driving range. One house is currently under construction with another soon to begin. We have also paid off the Happy State Bank loan for the golf carts, so that will save us about $1,400. per month.

We will be getting some “for sale” signs posted on the 44-46 acres of land located behind the tennis courts soon. Since this land cannot be sold without stock members approval we will tell them to make an offer and we will take it to the members. Even though undeveloped land sells for 3 to 5 thousand an acre, we will set our sights a little higher, because of the beauty of the area.

One last thing. Since I have been doing this “Newsletter” for the past year, I would like some feedback. So if you get a chance let me know (phone, e-mail…), or let Casey or Courtney know how you feel.

Happy Holidays from all of the staff at your Canyon Country Club. I hope everyone had a great golfing year and has an even better one next year. I would like to thank, once again, Mikel Walser and his crew, for their hard work all year long. I personally think that we have the best 9 hole facility in the state and with out their hard work that would not be possible. Remember that you can do your part in helping them out by sanding your divots and repairing your ball marks on the green.

Christmas Open House
I will be hosting my annual Christmas Open House on December 6th. All merchandise in the shop will be marked down and you will have chance to win an even bigger discount on the items that you would like to purchase. There will be free gift wrapping, holiday treats and spirits, and good prices on quality merchandise. This will also be a good time to clear all that credit that you have won throughout the year. Don’t forget – the sales starts at 9:00 a.m.

Ladies Auxiliary Christmas Party
The Annual Ladies Auxiliary Christmas party will be held on December 1st at 6:00 p.m. All ladies are invited to attend (you do not have to be a member of the auxiliary). Please bring a covered dish for dinner and a $15.00 gift for exchange. Please put your name on the gift so that the person receiving it will know who it is from. Remember – the fun starts at 6:00 and lasts until 9:00.

Canyon Country Club’s Christmas Party
On Saturday, December 6th, the club’s Potluck Christmas Party will begin a 7:00 p.m. We ask that everyone bring a covered dish or desert and the club will furnish the meat for the meal. This is a great opportunity to come meet your fellow members and spread some holiday cheer. Also, please bring a $2 scratch off lottery ticket for a fun game. The fun starts at 6:30 p.m.

New Year’s Eve Party
The Club will be hosting their annual New Year’s Eve Party. The party will start on December 31st at 7:00 p.m. The club will furnish snacks and finger foods. This is always a fun time so we hope to see everyone there.

It’s hard to believe were looking at the first of November already. The leaves are starting to change and temperatures are slowing coming down. The weather has been cooperating for golf and I encourage everyone to get out there and play while you can, who knows what the winter months will bring,

We are now taking nominations for three (3) positions for the 2009 Board of Directors. Two (2) of the positions are for three-year terms, and one is for a one-year term. I encourage anyone with an interest to contact someone on the nominating committee, Charlie McClure, Dick Archer, Wilma Higginbotham, Laurie Hollingsworth, Ron Reynolds, Red Higginbotham and Doug Rittenberry, or to contact Casey or Courtney @ ccc@midplains.coop. We (the current Board of Directors) have discussed the need for some proactive planning for the Country Club. We need to look to the future as much as possible to try and develop some strategic planning for our continued existence. Whether we seriously look at future expansion to an 18-hole facility or updating the current facilities (Pro Shop & Clubhouse), we need to be as proactive as possible to strengthen our membership and grow as a club. I do not have all the answers but I am willing to look at all possibilities to make Canyon Country Club the finest course around.

Thanks to our nominating committee for heading up this challenge. Once again if you are interested in running for the board please contact a committee member, Casey or Courtney. I hope you will consider this request wholeheartedly.

The annual Christmas party will be held on December 6th, at 7:00 p.m. Theresa will be cooking all the meat and the ladies are asked to bring a covered dish or a desert. We also ask that everyone bring a $2.00 Lottery Scratch-off Ticket. This will be for a fun game that everyone will enjoy. Remember, the fun starts at 7:00 p.m.

Tournament season is over. Hope everyone had a great golf season. Now that the grass is turning brown, remember that there are several things that you can do to help the course through the winter. Remember to sand all divots, repair your pitch marks on the greens, and to stay on the cart path for as long as you can. Cart compaction can have a direct effect of the quality of turf that we have in the spring. Remember to do these things to help Mikel keep our course looking great.

Thanks again to everyone who played in our tournaments. I'll be working on next years schedule pretty soon, so keep a look out for that.

Course Closed on Thanksgiving Day

I would like to thank all of the stockholders that were able to attend the special stockholder’s meeting that we had Monday, the 22nd. I am sorry not more stockholders were able to attend but I understand that people are busy. The first order of business that we discussed was the Aurora Note that has been called due. It was voted that we would refinance the balance due with Happy State Bank for 10 years. Included in that was the decision that CCC is going to take the money from the sale of 3 lots and add to that money that was in the land CD and payoff the cart note, eliminating a $1,400 monthly payment. The second order of business is the stockholder’s voted to allow the board to use up to $15,000 of the land CD to pay any bills they need to during the winter months. It is a struggle every winter to make the obligations that the club has. During the past two years we have borrowed money to make bills, hopefully we won’t have to borrow or use the money allowed to the board by the stockholders.

We still have lots for sale and if you know of anyone that is thinking about building please mention to him or her about our lots and how beautiful it is down here. We also have the 40 plus acres we would like to sale. It would be nice if a developer would buy them and start a housing development so if you know a developer mention to them about the land.

It has been a great summer and let’s hope that the fall is a good one so that we can continue to play golf.

The Vice President reminded the members that meetings will be held on the 2nd Thursday in the fall and winter months. The next scheduled meeting will be October 9th at 7:00 p.m.

Lady members we need to "SELL MORE TICKETS" for the Auxiliary raffle, and get the money turned in. The drawing will be Saturday, September 27th following play.

We will be using funds already raised this year to purchase a new deep fat fryer for the café.

The Senior Partnership will be held on October 11th & 12th. This is open to men who are 50 years old or older. The first day will be a scramble and the second day will be low ball. Flights will be determined by your combined handicap. Call the golf shop to sign up your team or for more information.

The only high school tournament for this school year will be held on Friday, October 24th. The Canyon ISD tournament will start at 8:30 a.m. The course will re-open at 1:30 p.m.

As August comes to a close, I hope everyone got a chance to play lots of golf this past summer. The course is in wonderful shape, and the Pro Shop staff continues to do an outstanding job. I am proud to tell people that I am a member of Canyon Country Club.

I am pleased to announce that there has been interest in newly platted lots on the south side of the clubhouse. We are hoping this interest turns into sales very quickly. Along with that I have sent letters to all the builders and developers in the Amarillo area, trying to spark some interest with them. If you are considering purchasing any of the available lots, don’t wait too long; they will be sold on a first come first serve basis.

I want to prepare everyone for an upcoming special stockholders meeting, that we will have to call in the near future. The Small Business Administration (SBA) Disaster Loan that was taken out in the late 1970’s to help rebuild the club after the “big flood” is being called due. We are either going to have to refinance with them, find other financing, or we can pay it off. The balance is somewhere in the area of $132,000. So keep watching the mail for that special stockholders meeting.

A couple other items I need to mention. The Board is increasing the late fees for past due accounts from $15 to $25. The Board has been requested to ask members not to tell employees what they feel their job duties or assignments should entail. If a member has a problem with an employee please contact a Board Member or Casey.

I have also heard all the wonderful compliments from the ladies during the Ladies Chaparral regarding Theresa’s meals that she served. They complimented every meal and said that the tournament as a whole went very well. Thanks to Theresa and her staff, as well as to all the staff at Canyon Country Club, for a job well done.

We were very busy here at the club in August. I would like to thank everyone that participated in our tournaments throughout the summer. The Roadrunner this year was a huge success. The Ladies Chaparral was played in some soggy conditions this year. The new format was fun and I think everyone had a good time (despite being soaked to the bone).
Cindy Guelker and Kelli Mooring finished 2nd in the Gold Flight. Good playing and thanks to all the ladies that did play this year.

September will be a busy month. Here is a list of the tournaments in September:

September 5th – Last Member Scramble
September 7th – Super Scramble (1:00 Shotgun Start)
September 14th – 19 – Man Shootout (1:00 Start)
September 20th & 21st – 3-Man Scramble (Morning and Afternoon Shotgun)
September 27th & 28th – Ryder Cup Matches

The Super Scramble is our year end member scramble. There will be over $1400 in prize money and possible skin money to be had. If you are interested in playing please call the shop to sign-up.

The 19-Man Shootout is a fun event. I will take the first 19 men to sign-up by the 14th of September. Cost is $10, so come out and enjoy the fun.

The Ryder Cup Matches will begin on Saturday the 29th. This is a fun event with the women versus the men. The men have won the last two years – but I’m sure the ladies will come out fighting to regain the cup.

The 3-Man Scramble will be held on September 20th and 21st. This event is open to all amateur men. There will be a morning and afternoon shotgun both days. This is filling up fast so get your team and call the golf shop to enter.

Canyon Country Club will be closed on Tuesday, September 2nd for fall aerification. We will be open on Wednesday, September 3rd at 8:00 a.m.

From the President
This past July was a good month; we had lots of play during the month. The Junior tournament was a big success with numerous golfers coming to play. We also have had a great turnout for the member’s scrambles, so if you haven’t had a chance to meet some other members this is a great opportunity. Other upcoming events include Club Championship, Aug 2 & 3; Pro-member scramble, August 4th; Ladies Chaparral, August 16th & 17th; and the Ladies Horserace is August 24th. Be sure and sign up with Casey at the Pro Shop.

The course looks fantastic; Mikel and his crew continue to do an outstanding job. Big thanks also to Casey and his staff for the professional way they handle the Pro Shop. They do a great job for the members and the guests.

I just want to remind everyone of the upcoming change, the club is going paperless. Please take time to fill out the form and return it to Courtney as soon as possible. This little step will save the club countless hours and a good deal of money throughout the course of the year.

I also want to remind everyone of the upcoming changes in the hours of operation for the swimming pool. The swimming pool will be closed August 25th – 29th. The pool will reopen on August 30th and will close at 7:00pm, September 1st for the reminder of the year.

One last thing I would like to mention is that of home lot sales. We now have the plot maps for several lots overlooking the driving range and the clubhouse area. The lots range in size from 1 acre to nearly 2 acres each. Prices vary depending on size and location of each lot. If you or someone you know is interested, contact either Joe Randal, Casey in the Pro Shop or any board member.

The Roadrunner Invitational was a huge success this year. I would like to thank everyone who helped me out this year. Thanks to Jimmy Jones, Derek Jones, Stan Price and Mike Duck for their help also. Thanks also to all the members who helped sponsor tee box signs. Without your help, the tournament wouldn’t have been the success that it was. August is filled with activity as usual. Here is a list of all of the events:
August 2nd & 3rd - Canyon Country Club’s Club Championship
August 4th – Pro-Member
August 16th & 17th – Ladies Chaparral
August 24th – Ladies Horserace

Member Scrambles will be held on August 1st, 8th, 14th, 22nd, and 29th.

The Men’s Club Championship will be decided by match play. Players will be flighted by handicap into 8-man flights. Each player is guaranteed to play in two matches (one on Saturday and one on Sunday). A player can lose on Saturday and still compete for the consolation prize. Players winning their Sunday morning matches will play an afternoon match. This format is a lot of fun and I hope to see everyone compete for the Club Championship.

The Ladies Club Championship will be Stroke Play with a gross and net division. Each player will receive their full handicap.
**Reminder for Saturday afternoon – There will be a Shoot-out for anyone interested in playing in it after the Saturday morning matches. This is a fun event for everyone and I hope that everyone hangs around to compete in the Shoot-out.

Pro – Member
My Pro-Member is scheduled for Monday, August 4th. I have 15 professionals lined up to come and play our beautiful golf course. This is a fun event and a good chance to play with the pros from around our area. Cost will be $60 to play (includes cart and lunch). If you are interested please call the golf shop to enter.
Ladies Chaparral
The Ladies Chaparral will be held the weekend of August 16th and 17th. The format will be a partnership with scramble on one day and low ball the second day. There will be a meal served on both days. If you or someone you know would be interested in playing then please call the golf shop to enter.
Ladies Horserace
The Ladies Horserace will be August 24th. Each player will play nine holes in the morning and then compete in a shoot-out in the afternoon. If you would like to play in this event, please call the golf shop.

From the President:

I hope everyone is doing well and playing lots of golf. The fairways and newly seeded rough are coming in very well. I would like to remind those in carts to pay close attention to the roped off areas. We will continue to rope off areas as need be to promote new growth throughout the course. The grass drainage area on the right side of # 4 will be a great addition and offer a more challenging hole.

A couple of items were discussed at the June Board of Directors meeting that I would like to bring to your attention. First, we (Board of Directors) have dedicated the restrooms in the clubhouse as smoke free.

Second, the new carts and cart rentals. We would ask you to be mindful of the new carts and to help take care of them. As much as possible keep the carts on the paths to avoid additional wear and tear. Each person renting the cart will now sign a cart rental form each time you rent it. Even those who have unlimited carts will sign the agreement each time. I know this will be a slight hassle but it’s the best way for the club to monitor all the carts and ensure their condition.
Next up is the Bar. Bar sales, more precisely mixed drink sales continue to cause the club more and more problems. By the time you receive this you may have already discovered an increase in the drink prices at the club. Everything is going up 25 cents, including beer. We are also going back to the 8 oz glass (standard bar size) instead of the Styrofoam cup for mixed drinks. I will try to explain this as briefly as possible. Bartenders were pouring customers drinks in the larger cup and customers were complaining that their drink was not strong enough and requested an additional shot. The bartender then feels like they have to provide them with another shot of alcohol at no cost. When you tally up the bar sales with the amount of alcohol we sold we are not anywhere close to the same. Therefore we are not paying TABC enough money in taxes. Just to give you an idea of cost, we were involved in a self-audit with TABC in July of 06 back to Sep of 03. They went back through all of our receipts and found were did not pay the appropriate amount of tax on our alcohol sales, therefore fining us nearly $3,000. Fines could have been as much as $18,000. As you can see this is not good business on behalf of Canyon Country Club. If we don’t get a better handle on the alcohol sales at the bar we could face additional fines or even lose our alcohol permit. If your drink is not strong enough for your liking, pay for a double shot of alcohol. Please do not ask the bartenders for an additional shot because you cannot taste the alcohol, they are mixing the drinks like they have been instructed to. If you have a problem, please feel free to contact me and we can discuss it.

The last thing I need to bring up is the Club is looking at going paperless for our statements, monthly calendars, and billing. We are also looking at direct deposit for all of our employees to also cut out cost. The monthly cost for sending our statements and the newsletters is approximately $270.00, with an annual cost of more than $ 3,200. This move is for financial purposes only. The newsletter is currently available on line at our website http://www.canyontxcountryclub.com/. Courtney will e-mail your statement at the first of the month just like before, but saving us money at the same time. You can also set up your savings account, checking account or credit card to draft you payment to the club as well. As expenses continue to increase this is one way the club can save some money and yet be a more efficient. For those who do not have access to the Internet, statements can be left at the Pro Shop for you to come by and pick up.

If there was something that I brought up in this newsletter that you do not agree with, I invite you to the next Board of Directors meeting to discuss it. The board is trying save money in any way we can, if you have any ideas please let us know.

Wayne Johnson’s BBQ
Wayne Johnson will be having a BBQ cook-out on Saturday, July 5th. Everyone is invited to come out and eat that day. The great food will be ready by about 4:00. Cost will be $7.00 a plate. Thanks to Wayne for all of his hard work and we hope to see you there.

NTPGA Jr. Tournament
Once again, Canyon Country Club is honored to host a Northern Texas PGA Jr. Tour event. The event will be held on July 10th. We are expecting around 60 kids to play our wonderful golf course. The course will open back up around 2:00 p.m.

Roadrunner Invitational
Our biggest tournament of the year is July 25th through the 27th. All members should have received an invitation. Included in the invitation was a tee-box sponsor sheet. If you or someone you know is interested in helping sponsor this event then please mail back the sponsor sheet to the club. Thanks for your support and thanks for playing.

Club Championship
Our club championship will be held August 2nd and 3rd. The format for the men will be match play and for the ladies will be stroke play (gross & net). I encourage all members to participate in this event. If you would like to sign-up for the club championship please call the golf shop. Starting times will be determined on Friday, August 1st.

Pro-Member
Canyon Country Club’s annual Pro-Member will be held on Monday, August 4th. I have many professionals from around the panhandle already signed up to play in the event. If you would like to play in the pro-member then call the shop. Starting times are flexible, so just let us know about what time that you can play. Thanks for supporting my Pro-Member.

Condolences
We would like to send out our thoughts and prayers to Marvin Fritts’ family. Marvin was a long time member at Canyon Country Club and will be missed. Also our thoughts and prayers go to Dorothy Gouldy’s family (Doug Rittenberry’s sister) and to Fred Jones (Sally Tucker’s brother).
